School
  • Emhoff went to college at Cal State Northridge
and got a Bachelor of Arts degree in
communication studies. Douglas went to the USC
Gould School of Law and got his J.D. in 1990.

6
Legal Work
  • Emhoff began his career as a partner at Pillsbury
Winthrop Shaw Pittman. In 1990, he moved to
Bingham McCutchen. The young lawyer moved to
Belin Rawlings Badal at the end of the decade
and became a partner there. His work in the
entertainment industry with Hollywood Video and
the studios gave him his first big taste of
    entertainment law.

7
Start the Law Firm
  • He started the law firm Whitwell Jacoby Emhoff
with two other people in the year 2000. He
finally got them to move their business
litigation practise to Venable LLP, which was a
bigger firm. Emhoff later joined a high-profile
lawsuit about who had the right to make the
famous Taco Bell chihuahua. He also worked on
important cases for the drug company Merck, the
arms dealer Dolarian Capital, and the NFL player
Willie Gault. After helping to open Venables
office in San Francisco, he was named managing
director of the companys West Coast operations
    in 2015.

Children from the First Relationship
  • Emhoff married the actress Kerstin Mackin in
1992. Cole was their son, and Ella was their
daughter. Both were named after famous jazz
musicians, John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald.
Before they split up, they had been married for
    16 years.

9
Marriage
  • In 2013, Emhoff and Harris met through a client
and friend of both of them. Harris was the top
lawyer in California at the time. The
relationship got better and better, and in March
2014, Emhoff asked her to marry him. They got
married at the courthouse in Santa Barbara,
California, on August 22, 2014. The ceremony,
which was a mix of Hindu and Jewish traditions,
was run by Harriss sister, Maya.

10
Won the Election
  • When Harris became Joe Bidens running mate in
August 2020, Emhoff took his campaigning more
seriously. His appearances with Jill Biden and
his use of social media as _at_DougHive brought him
attention. On November 7, 2020, when it was
announced that they had won the election, he was
there to record his wifes happy call to Biden.
This was a historic moment because Harris was the
first woman, black person, and Asian American to
get to her position, and Emhoff was the first
Jewish person to marry a vice president of
    the United States.
