Title: Career options after completion of Law

1
  • Career options after completion of Law
  • Many students get confused when they think of law
as their career option. The question that comes
into their mind is whether we should pursue law
or not? Majorly, the reason behind such
confusion is the lack of awareness about career
options available for a student after completion
of a law degree. Most of the students have a
    pre-notion about limited mainstream options
available as their career options after
graduating in law. Nonetheless, the new avenues
have widened the scope of career choices and have
made law the preferred choice of the new
students. Here are career options that you can
    pursue after completion of law-
  • Postgraduate studies from reputed global
institutions- Studying at the University of
Oxford or Cambridge is a dream of students. What
if you can get to do your LLM or MPhil from
these universities? Once you complete Law, you
have opportunities to pursue your Masters from
the worlds top universities and colleges.
Moreover, law scholars from India are preferred
by these universities because of the five-year
integrated courses that are now popular and have
an exhaustive study pattern. Other than that,
    there are fully-funded prestigious scholarships
like Rhodes, Commonwealth, etc. which also
prioritize students who have pursued the law as
    their undergraduate degree.
  • Public Policy and Law researcher- If you are a
person who is intrigued with how the policies
are formulated in India that helps in governing
the executive functions as well as other
societal responsibilities and if you wish to be a
part of policy making team, then law degree is
really important. These research centres and
think tanks that have the responsibility of
drafting these policies do prefer researchers who
have a degree in law because of their vast
knowledge in this area. So, this field is another
area that is dominated by law graduates.
  • Judicial clerkships- Judicial clerkship is a
contractual position offered by judges of the
High Court, Supreme Court, etc. The role of the
judicial clerk is to assist the judge in the
court with researching, drafting, and other
routine work. So, a person who is fascinated to
understand the functioning of the judicial system
and wants to see the law from the eye of judges,
can, after pursuing law as an undergraduate,
    avail of this exclusive opportunity.
  • Research associates and fellowships- There are
many research centres that require legal
associates to work with them. For example,
project 39-A, Centre for Criminology and
    Victimology, etc. requires research legal
associates. Students who have an interest in the
field of research can pursue these jobs.
Additionally, there are many fellowships where
legal researchers are required or are preferred.
Some of the fellowships are the LAMP fellowship,
Teach for India fellowship, and like. Even the
Law Commission of India seeks legal researchers
for their research work that has to be done in
    order to prepare commission reports.
  • Others- Other than that, mainstream career
options like litigation lawyer, corporate jobs,
    In-house counsel, judicial examinations, civil
service examinations, PSU jobs, lecturer, etc.
are available for a student to pursue after law
graduation. However, the new areas are providing
better career opportunities for lawyers and are
seeking the attention of students as their
    desired career options.

Hence, do not be scared to pursue law because
after completing the same, there are plenty of
diverse opportunities available for law students
to choose and select according to their
interests.
