Who Is Naomi Osaka?
  • Naomi Osaka has been playing tennis since she was
three years old. Naomi was born in the U.S. but
has Japanese citizenship and is a judge for Japan
(her mother is from Japan, and her father is from
Haiti). Naomi Osaka has a service that goes 120
miles per hour. She was the first Japanese player
to win a Grand Slam title and the first Asian
player to be ranked No. 1 in the world.

Early Life
  • On October 16, 1997, Naomi Osaka was born in
Osaka City, Osaka, Japan. Tamaki Osaka Leonard
Maxime Francois met in the 1990s in Sapporo,
Japan. When Tamakis family found out she was
dating a Haitian man, they thought it was a
shame, but she and Francois still got married.
The couple went to the city of Osaka, where Osaka
was conceived a year and a half after her more
seasoned sister Mari. To make things easier for
them in Japan, the girls were given their
    mothers last name.

Tennis Career Would Be Successful
  • On the courts, Naomi Osaka and Mari became
friends, but Osaka has been driven for years to
beat Mari in a match. Mari was a good player at
first, but injuries slowed her down. The Japanese
side of Osakas family was at first doubtful that
her tennis career would be successful, but they
changed their minds as she became successful.

Tennis Career
  • Naomi Osaka, who is 5 feet 11 inches tall,
skipped junior tournaments and went straight to
pro satellite tours, just like Venus and Serena
did. In 2016, the Womens Tennis Association
chose her as Newcomer of the Year. She turned
pro in 2013. In March 2018, she won her first
match on the WTA tour at Indian Wells,
California. Then, in September 2018, Osaka won
the U.S. Open, making her the first player from
Japan to win a Grand Slam.

Nominated for a Buzzword of the Year Award
  • In Japan, the way she talks is called
Naomi-bushi, which was nominated for a buzzword
of the year award in 2018. The fact that Osaka
always bows during her matches is also seen as
    something very Japanese.

7
Activism
  • Osaka is now one of the most influential people
in professional tennis. She dropped out of the
Cincinnati Open in 2020 to bring attention to the
shooting of Jacob Blake. For the 2020 U.S. Open,
Osaka wore masks with the names of Breonna
Taylor, Ahmad Arbery, Trayvon Martin, and George
Floyd, who were all African Americans who were
    hurt by police.
