Pre-Refinishing Checklist

• Make sure you seal doorways with plastic sheets.
• Turn off forced-air HVAC to stop wood dust from
  circulating to the rest of your home.
• Have a good dust mask or respirator, ear
  protection, and goggles to protect you from dust
  and noise during the refinishing process. Have
  sufficient experience to complete the project, or
  call the experts.

Buffing
When? Try the buffing method if you have visible
scratches and wear only on the surface of the
hardwood floor. If the wood underneath is in good
shape, it can be restored by buffing. How? Use
a buffing tool with a series of screen grits.
This will restore lustre to your wooden
floors. Next, sweep and vacuum the dust between
each grit. Lastly, refinish your floors with a
low VOC water- based finish or polyurethane
floor finish.

Sanding and Refinishing
when ? Use this method to restore old, damaged
hardwood flooring.
How? Rent or buy a drum sander and a progression
of grits, starting from 40 grits up to 100
grits. Remove baseboards. Keep the sander moving t
o avoid gouging the floor. Avoid getting too
close to the walls. Use a hand-held orbital
sander to finish along the wall. Once you have
reached the bare wood, fill the cracks using
colour- matched wood filler. Apply stain and
allow it to dry completely. Reapply two to three
coats of finish the same way.
