What is ONDC?
Touted as the UPI of digital commerce, the ONDC
platform aims to provide a one-stop shop for all
digital commerce needs. ONDC is based on an
open-sourced methodology to create an open,
standards-based network for all aspects of trade
over a digital or electronic network, similar to
hypertext transfer protocol is used to exchange
information over the World Wide Web and simple
mail transfer protocol for exchanging emails.

How does ONDC work? The current
platform-centric digital commerce model prevalent
in India forces the buyer and seller to use the
same platform or application to buy a product or
service. These platforms work in silos and do not
interact with each other, which leads to data
duplication, and makes it difficult to keep track
of the vast number of applications. This also
benefits the larger players as they can invest in
the technology to keep consumers on their
platform and, in turn, dictate the buyer behavior
through tactics such as price gouging, favoring a
limited number of sellers, or pushing their own
products.

The ONDC Process ONDC aims to simplify the
digital commerce chain into multiple parts the
buyer app, the gateway, the seller app, and
logistics providers. A buyer app can be any
e-commerce platform, a banking app, a D2C app, or
a cab-hailing app, where the consumer logs in,
searches for products or services and completes a
transaction. Similarly, the seller app can be any
platform registering sellers of goods or
services electronics brands, wholesalers or
retailers, restaurants, cab drivers, local
grocery stores, and local service providers such
as electricians or plumbers. An e-commerce
platform can enlist itself on both buyer and
seller apps or one of those.
