Vitamins and minerals are organic compounds used
in very small amounts by our bodies for various
metabolic processes. They help in keeping our
bodies healthy and to function properly. Mostly
we get the vitamins and minerals through our
diet. However, consuming them in the right amount
is essential as they can lead to toxicity if
consumed in large amounts and can cause
deficiency diseases if the body runs short of
them. They can help with B12 deficiency
treatment, iron deficiency treatment and many
others. What are deficiency diseases? Have you
heard of the B12 folate supplement? Yes, just
like this one, there are other vitamin and
mineral supplements available to help you provide
your body with these. A balanced diet is also
extremely important to provide the body with all
the essential vitamins and minerals. An imbalance
diet on the other hand can lead to excess or
insufficient intake of certain nutrients.
Insufficient vitamins or minerals can further
lead to deficiency diseases. Following is a list
of some of the vitamins and minerals and the
deficiency diseases caused by them

Vitamin A A very crucial micronutrient is
obtained from different food sources like

Vitamin A helps with reproduction, normal vision,
healthy immune system and growth of an
individual. Vitamin A deficiency during pregnancy
leads to complications during childbirth.

like B1, B2, B12 etc. The deficiency disease is

causes beriberi. It is a disease that results in
severe weight loss and weak muscles. Acute
deficiency of the same can result in cardiac
failure and heart attack. Vitamin B6 Lack of
this vitamin leads to anemia and certain skin
disorders like cracks around the mouth. It can
also lead to nervous breakdowns and
depression. Vitamin B12 Vitamin B12 also causes
pernicious anemia. Other than this, vitamin B12
deficiency leads to extreme fatigue, muscle and
nerve paralysis, dementia and depression. Vitamin
C Vitamin C deficiency can cause scurvy, a
disease that causes bleeding of the gums, and
swelling in joints and skin spots. It largely
affects the immune system and can even be fatal
in certain cases
6
Vitamin D Lack of vitamin D causes rickets. A
disease that leads to the weakening of bones,
especially near the joints. It also leads to
tooth decay. Vitamin K Blood coagulation
requires vitamin K. Deficiency of vitamin K is
most common in infants, where due to the
inability to form blood clots, leads to excessive
bleeding. Mineral deficiency diseases Minerals
are inorganic nutrients including trace elements
such as zinc, copper, iodine, and iron, along
with the micronutrients such as potassium,
calcium, magnesium and sodium. Following is the
list of a few minerals along with the deficiency
diseases that are associated with them
7
Iodine It is an important element required for
the developing fetus. It has a role to play in
the brain development of the fetus. Iodine is
also responsible for the production of hormones.
The deficiency of iodine leads to goiter.
8
Iron In the form of hemoglobin, iron carries
oxygen from the lungs to different tissues of the
body. Thus, its deficiency causes anemia. It is a
condition in which the tissues do not receive the
required oxygen from the bloodstream, which can
be fatal. Red meat, poultry, spinach, etc. Are a
few iron-rich foods.
