What Is Swimmer's Shoulder and How Is It Treated?
Swimmer shoulder is a very common problem in
day-to day life as swimmer shoulder involves a
tendon, the tissue that connects muscle to bone.
The tendon of the shoulder is inflamed and gets
swollen, pressing on nearby bones, muscles and
other tendons. Swimmers shoulder is also known as
shoulder impingement, sub-acromial impingement or
acromial arch. Swimmers shoulder is caused by
repeated strain in shoulder joint irritates
tendon and muscle, through which tiny tear is
developed leading to inflammation and scar
tissue. This damage affects the smoothness of the
joint. Sometimes it also leads to rotator cuff
tears.
Common symptoms of swimmers shoulder include
muscle weakness and fatigue, reduced range of
motion of shoulder joint, shoulder pain and
instability. For diagnosing swimmers shoulder
your physician will perform a procedure,
including elevating your arm overhead check pain
and swelling of the region your physician will
also check the range of motion and shoulder
stability. Imaging examinations likes X-Ray, MRI
detects more serious bone and soft tissue injury.
Shoulder impingement typically takes 3 to 6
months to get back to normal or heal the
impingement condition also it may vary according
to the treatment you are taking. If on time you
take rest, avoid exertion, and have all
favourable treatment, then it may heal early, or,
if you avoid and exert and let the case be more
severe and complicated, then it may take a whole
year to get back to original healed shoulder.
3
Swimmers shoulder can be treated by applying
icing to the shoulder after treating for about 20
minutes. Using anti-inflammatory medication also
helps with swimmers shoulder as it reduces the
inflammation caused by impingement. Total rest is
required, no swimming for about 45 hours of
impingement as already the region is impinging
the inflammation can be exerted if you avoid
resting. This is the conservative treatment
approach is applied to treat swimmers shoulder
firstly, that means treatment without surgery
other treatment may include Ergonomic adjustments
that means professionals tries to moderate your
environment in such way that it avoids your
repetitive movements. Try to change your home and
work place accordingly. For example, move items
that you frequently need to your lower shelves to
avoid overhead abduction movement. Steroid
injections shot are also given to reduce
inflammation of shoulder region It also provides
temporary pain relief. Also, physical therapy
plays a major role in patients with swimmers
shoulder stretches strength training also joint
stabilization exercise can help to heal your
swimmers shoulder early. A physical therapist or
sports therapist can provide strategies to
prevent re-injury.
Most people with swimmers shoulder do not require
surgery, but, surgery may be an option if pain
doesn't improve with conservative treatment, As
to treat swimmers shoulder, your surgeon will
perform a procedure called "Sub acromial
Decompression".
4
It removes bone slurps and inflamed tissue from
the shoulder. In some cases, the surgeon uses a
minimally invasive approach for the treatment.
During arthroscopic shoulder decompression, a
surgeon makes several tiny incisions or, you can
say cuts than by using a tiny lighted tube
arthroscope the surgeon sees the anomalies this
technique is useful as it allows operation
without large incisions.
5
Contact Doctor right away if you have pain in
shoulder movements or notice inflammation or
swelling, or bruising around your shoulder
joints. Mostly shoulder injuries don't call for
alarm you have to identify it timely to avoid
severe complications.
