ALL ABOUT FOLLICULITIS
Infected or inflamed hair follicles, medically
known as "folliculitis," are a common cause of
skin irritation and disease. In its early stages,
this illness resembles acne, manifesting as
little red pimples all over the skin.
Folliculitis can display everywhere on the body,
including the face, arms, back, and legs. In
milder situations, self-care is sufficient, but
more severe cases require the expertise of a
dermatologist.
The cosmetic nature of folliculitis can have
significant psychological and social
consequences. Folliculitis comes in various
forms, each distinguished by its root cause,
infectious agent, and skin manifestation.
Everyday activities like shaving, soaking in a
hot tub, and excessive perspiration from exercise
or outdoor labour can all lead to folliculitis.
The unfortunate reality is that follicles can
collect bacteria and other things from the
environment that might lead to inflammation and
infection. The swelling that occurs when
inflammation sets in. When a hair follicle is
inflamed, it can cause a lump to appear on the
skin.
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Rough patches of skin

3
How can one get folliculitis?
Inflammation (swelling) and infection of a hair
follicle is the typical cause of folliculitis.
This causes the follicle to enlarge beneath the
skin, resulting in unsightly and irritating
lumps. The root cause of folliculitis isn't
usually identified, especially for the different
subtypes. However, folliculitis risk can be
increased by several other things. Some potential
dangers include -
  • A regular shaving routine that is.
  • When an oral antibiotic has been taken for an
    extended period.
  • If you're overweight or obese.
  • If you've had diabetes before.
  • If you engage in activities that cause you to
sweat heavily and then fail to shower afterwards
    thoroughly.
  • If you use a sauna or hot tub that hasn't been
    appropriately sanitised.

Symptoms
Some symptoms of folliculitis are -
4
  • Acne is characterised by clusters of white- or
red-headed pimples that form around hair
    follicles.
  • Pustules that eventually burst and form a crust
  • Red, itchy, and burning skin
  • Cracked, sensitive skin
  • A big, puffy bulge or hump

Treatment of folliculitis
How severe your folliculitis is and what kind it
is will determine your treatment options.
Treatment for some forms may need to be more
robust than others, and some conditions may
resolve themselves without any medical
intervention. Mild cases of folliculitis can
often be managed at home. To soothe your
aggravated skin, you can do things like-
Cleaning the skin with an antibacterial cleaner.
As a result, the microorganisms on your skin will
decrease.
You can ease the agony of your sensitive skin by
applying warm clothes to it. Use lotions that
stop itching.
Most cases of Pseudomonas folliculitis (hot tub
rash) and other milder forms of folliculitis
clear up within a few days. Contact your doctor
if they don't. Folliculitis that has progressed
to a severe stage may require treatment with oral
antibiotics.
5
Your doctor may need to drain deeper infections,
such as boils or carbuncles. Getting rid of the
pus will help the wound heal. It is possible to
control Pseudofolliculitis barbae and Sycosis
barbae, two disorders that affect the beard
region, by modifying your shaving routine. These
alterations may include -
  • Soak the skin in hot water before shaving to
    soften the hair.
  • Avoid nicks and cuts by shaving in the direction
    of hair growth.

6
  • Make use of shaving cream or gel.
  • Rather than shaving every day, you should
    alternate days.
  • Swapping out a standard razor blade for an
electric one or another hair-removal product.
  • When shaving, try not to pull at the skin.
