Protection

  • Ashley Oelsen has been involved in the
environmental protection field for many years. As
an activist, she spends her time teaching others
about topics such as water conservation,
    sustainable agriculture, and wildlife habitat
restoration. Ashley explained what are these
    environmental protection fields and About
    Sustainability.

What Does Environmental Protection Mean?
  • Environmental protection means protecting natural
resources and ecosystems from dangerous human
activities that threaten their health and
sustainability. In this Field, Ashley is making a
difference by teaching children how they can help
preserve the environment. Ashley said shes
passionate about educating our next generation of
leaders on environmental issues so they can make
informed decisions about protecting our planet.

What is Water Conservation?
  • Water conservation is a process by which water is
used and reused in order to save it. The goal of
water conservation is to reduce the amount of
freshwater that is used in order to conserve
natural resources. Water conservation is an
important part of a sustainable lifestyle. It is
also one of the easiest ways to make an impact on
your carbon footprint and help conserve natural
resources. To practice water conservation, you
can start by looking at your daily routine and
making small changes that will have a big impact
over time. Ashley Oelsen is working hard to teach
others about how they can conserve water.

What is Sustainable Agriculture?
  • Sustainable agriculture is farming and ranching
in a way that protects our natural resources and
builds soil so that future generations can feed
themselves. It is an approach that makes sense
    economically and environmentally. Farmers who
practice sustainable agriculture use methods like
crop rotation, cover crops, composting, mulching,
and no-till planting to protect soil quality.
They conserve water by using drip irrigation,
mulch trees to reduce evaporation from the soil,
and harvesting rainwater for their livestocks
drinking needs. With these efforts, they minimize
pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals in
order to preserve air quality as well as wildlife
    habitats.

Wildlife Habitat Restoration
  • Wildlife Habitat Restoration is about bringing
back healthy habitats that support native plants
and animals so they can thrive. People around the
world are using these principles to restore their
landscapes, parks, farms, and even urban areas
like sidewalks and rooftops. The benefits of
    restoring wildlife habitats include
  • 1) Providing safe spaces for wildlife to find
food and water in an increasingly human-dominated
    world.
  • 2) Lessening some of the impacts caused by
climate change such as droughts and floods.
  • 3) Helping rebuild ecosystems that have been
degraded from overuse or abuse such as
    agriculture, or pollution.
