WHAT EXACTLY IS A POST-GRADUATE WORK PERMIT?

2
A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) permits you
to stay in Canada and work full-time after
completing an 8-month certificate, diploma, or
degree. You do not require a job offer to apply,
and you can work in any occupation in Canada,
even if it is unrelated to your studies. The only
exceptions are positions at danger of
exploitation or jobs that need a medical checkup,
such as teaching or working in a health care
setting.
3
What is the Point of Applying?
A PGWP is a practical approach to put what you've
learned at UBC to use, improve your professional
ambitions, and get Canadian work experience,
which may be required to qualify for some
permanent residence programmes. Other sorts of
Canadian citizenship might be difficult to get in
general. If you are unclear whether you will stay
or return to Canada after finishing your studies,
apply for the PGWP in case your intentions
change, as you would lose the option to apply
after 180 days. You do not have to live in Canada
or work at all times to have your work permit
active.
4
Is it possible To apply?
  • You must fulfil all of the following conditions
to be eligible for a PGWP
  • You must have completed an eight-month programme
of study that resulted in a degree, diploma, or
    certificate.
  • You must have studied full-time during each
academic session, with no breaks. This excludes
regular programme breaks, such as winter or
    summer vacation for undergraduate students.
  • Unless you fulfil the requirements under IRCC's
interim policy during the pandemic and
transition, you must have completed at least 50
of your programme in Canada, which is computed
based on the number of courses completed in
    Canada..

5
PGWP Duration
The term of the work permit ranges from a minimum
of 8 months to a maximum of 3 years based on the
official length of your programme, not the amount
of time spent completing programme requirements.
If you finish a four-year undergraduate degree,
you are eligible for a three-year PGWP. If you
are a graduate student, request a personalised
Letter of Completion indicating the length of
your study. If your graduate programme offers a
variable time period, such as 12-24 months,
suggest that your letter mentions the amount of
credits and/or speaks to the rigorous nature of
your programme, create a letter of explanation,
and contact International Student Advising for
assistance.

Get Certificate of Completion
  • Depending on your faculty or programme, you may
need to apply for graduation, request your
letter, or it may be provided automatically.
  • Typically, your Letter of Completion will be
    accessible immediately after fulfilling your
final programme requirement, such as earning your
final grade or submitting your thesis.
  • You can usually find it in the Student Services
Centre , or it may be provided to you by your
    programme or faculty.
  • If you are unsure when your Letter of Completion
will be available, or how to request or obtain
it, please contact an Academic Advisor or
    Graduate Program Staff.
  • After you have finished the programme
requirements, be sure to check every day to see
if you have received your Letter of Completion.
