Understanding Blood Pressure Measurement Readings
  • High blood pressure is the bane of people living
hectic and stressful lifestyles. Hypertension is
a condition where the blood flow in the heart
exerts too much pressure on the walls of the
arteries either when it is beating or when it
    rests between beats.
  • Improper eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle
along with stress are the main culprits. Even
genetics plays an important role in people
becoming hypertensive. In case the doctor says
you have hypertension, then it will become
important for you to keep a tab on your blood
    pressure measurement every day.
  • However, you need to understand what the blood
pressure readings mean before you go ahead. As
mentioned above there are 2 types of readings
systolic is when the blood exerts pressure on the
artery walls when the heart beats and diastolic
is the reading is the pressure when the heart
    rests between beats.
  • The normal blood pressure reading is when the
systolic pressure is 120 or less and the
diastolic pressure is 80 or less. In fact, it is
advisable that you buy a digital monitor meant
    for home use.
  • If you use a digital monitor meant for home use
then it will be easier to take the readings of
your blood pressure measurement every day.
However, for you to understand what your BP
readings mean let us look at what they mean.
  • Systolic pressure elevated 120-129 and diastolic
less than or equal to 80
  • Systolic pressure hypertensive stage 1 130-139
    and/or diastolic 80-89
  • Systolic pressure hypertensive stage 2 140 or
higher or/and diastolic 90 or higher
  • Hypertensive crisis systolic pressure higher
    than 180 and/or diastolic higher than 120
  • Here if you are looking at a hypertensive crisis
then you should immediately consult a doctor and
take treatment. And you should consult a doctor
about the right kind of medicine and dosage if
you are in stage 1 or 2 of hypertension. So, you
now know what to do in different stages of
hypertension as shown by your digital monitor.
