  • What is Radiation Therapy?

Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) is a
cancer treatment that uses high doses of
radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.
At low doses, radiation is used in x-rays to see
inside your body, as with x-rays of your teeth or
broken bones.

  • TYPES OF RADIATION THERAPY

5
  • External Beam Radiation Therapy

External beam radiation therapy uses high doses
of radiation to destroy cancer cells and shrink
tumors. A large machine aims radiation at the
cancer. The machine moves around you, without
touching you. Most treatments last from 2 to 10
weeks.
  • Types
  • Photons
  • Protons
  • Electrons

6
  • Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy allows doctors to deliver higher
doses of radiation to more-specific areas of the
body, compared with the conventional form of
radiation therapy (external beam radiation) that
projects radiation from a machine outside of your
body.
  • Used to Treat
  • Endometrial cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Eye cancer
  • Head and neck cancers

Advantage for the Patients
  • The main advantage of radiotherapy is that it may
help to control the growth of cancer.
  • You may be able to carry on with your daily life,
such as going to work, if you feel up to it.
  • If you have advanced cancer, radiotherapy can
help control symptoms and relieve pain.

  • Disadvantages for the Patient
  • Radiotherapy can cause side effects, including
tiredness, sickness and runny poo (diarrhoea).
  • If you have chemoradiotherapy, you may get side
    effects from the chemotherapy.
  • If you have borderline resectable cancer and
locally advanced pancreatic cancer, you may have
to go to the hospital five days a week for your
    treatment, although this may vary.
