Introduction
  • Plumbers often find leaks in underground pipes by
digging up the ground, but this can cause
unnecessary damage to structures and the
environment. Nowadays, there are safer and more
    environmentally-friendly ways to locate leaks.
  • The new water leak detection methods used by
plumbers are more technical, plus they prevent
unnecessary damage and harm from occurring.
  • With the use of cameras and other technologies,
leaks can be located in a non-destructive way. In
fact, these techniques are so advanced that they
can even detect very small leaks!
  • These technologies also allow for pinpointing of
the exact location of a leak. This is helpful
especially for large projects where many pipes
may need to be repaired or replaced.

Locate your Water Meter
  • To remove the lid on your water meter, you'll
need to use a hook or screwdriver to lift it off
    of the box.
  • The lid is usually made of concrete, so it's
quite heavyyou may want to get help from another
    person.
  • Insert your hook or screwdriver into one of the
slots on either side of the lid and pull upwards
until you hear a click. This will release some
    tension on the lid.

6
Turn off every faucet
  • To ensure that your home is safe during the water
supply interruption, it is important to follow
    these guidelines.
  • First, turn off every faucet, fixture, and
appliance that uses watereven raise the bail
wire on the ice maker to turn it off.
  • Do NOT turn off the main shutoff valve located by
    the water meter.

7
Note the dials on the Water Meter
  • Some water meters have a small dial meant to be a
leak detector. If this is moving, water is
    traveling through the meter.
  • If your meter doesnt have this, use a grease
pencil to mark where the needle is pointing.
  • If nothing seems to be moving, try turning off
your main water valve and waiting at least five
minutes before turning it back on again. This
will allow any pressure in the system to
dissipate so that when you turn it back on again,
it wont cause any damage or leaks.

8
Leave the water shut off
  • If your water meter isn't moving, and you're sure
that no one is using any water in your home or
    business, it's possible that there's a leak
    somewhere in the plumbing.
  • You can try turning off the water supply at the
main valve for 30 minutes and then checking to
see if the needle has moved from the mark. If it
has, your plumbing is leaking somewhere.
