  • Burnout isnt exclusive to office workers. Its
    widespread among parents too.
  • While not as talked about, parents are struggling
now more than ever before, which is something
that we need to talk about.
  • Unfortunately, many parents (with dads being at
the top of that list) dont seek the help they
need when theyre feeling burnt out.
  • Instead, they dismiss their feelings and continue
trying to get through it independently. Which has
us wondering, what is the burnout remedy for
    parents?

The burnout remedy for parents that we all need.
  • Dr. Ben and Dr. Ashley from The Burnout Blueprint
have 14 years of combined experience helping
    parents with burnout.
  • Their vast focus is on quality of life how do
you feel? How are you sleeping? They always found
that burnout was gradual it didnt happen
    quickly.
  • However, they have seen burnout in parents become
much more prevalent over the past five years and
now much worse since the pandemic.

Immediately overnight our homes became our
workplace.
  • Dr. Ben shared that immediately overnight, your
    home became your workplace.
  • We often focus on burnout in the workplace, but
we dont usually look at the home environment,
the working from home, and the homeschooling
    environment.
  • To get well again, we must identify where on the
    burnout spectrum you are.
  • Are you just starting to feel burnt out? Or are
you deep in it? Recognizing this is the first
step in the burnout blueprint to get the burnout
    remedy in full motion.

Pillars of good health are hugely important.
  • Good food, good sleep, exercise, and surprisingly
    doing less.
  • These are all very important for parents to
    emphasize.
  • Are you finding that you are working more and
more hours but getting less and less done? Then
its time to understand that your might be
dealing with burnout, and its time to get help!

How to manage parental burnout
  • As common as parental burnout is, parents can use
what psychologists have discovered about risk
factors to both reduce their risk and mitigate
existing symptoms by finding creative ways to
    rebalance their stress and resources.

1. Talk about it
  • Open sharing about feelings of burnout can
facilitate social support, a much-needed resource
for stressed-out parents short on coping skills.
  • But admitting youre struggling isnt always
easy burned-out parents often feel isolated and
ashamed, which can prevent them from healthy
    dialogue with supportive people.

2. Reevaluate your stress

facilitate social support, a much-needed resource
for stressed-out parents short on coping skills.

3. Make small changes
  • Parental burnout can hit particularly hard
because, unlike occupational burnout, its not
always possible to take a vacationwhich may
leave you feeling like you cant escape the
    stressor.
  • When your stress level outweighs your resources,
Mikolajczak suggests finding smaller ways to
    lower stress levels.

4. Grow your parenting skills
  • Parents should consider adding skills to their
    parenting toolboxes, according to Coyne.
  • Because burnout is marked by a disconnect in how
youre parenting now and who you were before,
growing in their parenting skills can give
parents a sense of efficacy in decreasing
parenting-related stressors and, as a result,
mitigate feelings of burnout, she said.

5. Take microbreaks
  • Self-care is a vital component of recovering from
any type of stress, but its not necessarily
realistic for everyone to plan a kid-free getaway
    to recover.
  • But even tiny breaks can helpfor example,
locking the door in the bathroom for 5 minutes to
take deep breaths or sitting in your car to
listen to a guided meditation after grocery
shopping can enhance resilience in parenting.

How burnout differs from stress
  • Burnout is a long-term condition while stress
    could be temporary.
  • You are usually aware of being under stress, but
you may not notice that you are experiencing
    burnout.
  • Stress is characterized by doing too much.
Chronic stress could lead to burnout the stage
when you disengage yourself from activities and
    people.
  • Your emotions may be heightened during stress
during burnout, you may feel emotionally blunted
    or numb.
  • Stress causes urgency and hyperactivity burnout
    causes helplessness and hopelessness.
