Title: What is E.coli? (1)

What is E.coli?
2
  • German-Austrian paediatrician Dr. Theodor
Escherich made the discovery of the bacterium
Escherichia coli (E. coli). It is a member of the
Enterobacteriaceae family. It is a mesophilic,
    facultatively anaerobic, gram-negative rod-shaped
bacterium that does not sporulate and is motile
    by peritrichous flagella.

They can be discovered in the environment, food,
and animal and human intestines. The group of
bacteria known as E. coli (ATCC 8739) is enormous
and diversified. Other bacterial strains can
cause infections, despite the fact that the
majority of E. coli strains are benign.

  • Here are some facts about E. coli
  • It is one of six species in the genus
    Escherichia, which is gram-negative.
  • The intestinal flora of healthy humans and other
    mammals frequently contains this bacteria.
  • In the fields of biotechnology and microbiology,
    E. coli is one of the prokaryote model organisms
that has been researched the most.
  • More than 700 different E. coli serotypes have
    been identified so far.
