When Maharishi Mahesh Yogi first discovered and
introduced Transcendental Meditation, his goal
was to create a sense of calmness and peace in
the world. To reach this objective, it was
important to inculcate peace in individuals
because individual peace is the basic unit of
world peace, with peaceful individuals, there can
never be a peaceful world.

Peace can be very difficult to establish in an
individual. It is not a mere adoption of a
psychological belief. Instead, it requires the
transformation at the deepest level of a human
mind to develop peace in an individual. It is a
deep concept and it is often said that when the
body and mind are at peace. Speech and thought
would respond accordingly. And all of them
together are bound to radiate an influence of
harmony in the surroundings. The social
