Any string or strap with a hook clasp may be used as a lanyard to hold items like identity tags, cell phones, and the like. It is often used to store and show employee ID cards at work as part of a uniform. These days, lanyards come in a variety of styles, but sublimated lanyards are the most often used since many companies require their employees to wear them. By using a technique called dye sublimation, lanyards may be customised to the needs of the client. It includes the colour printing of the lanyard strap using sublimation, or the vaporisation of ink before it is applied to the lanyard material. The lanyard material is not damaged during the dye sublimation process, but it is now coloured by ink.
