The ASTM G21 test method is used to determine
whether synthetic polymer and plastic materials
are resistant to fungus growth. Because they
don't provide fungal growth with carbon, pure
synthetic polymer materials typically resist
fungi.
However, the fungal growth and deterioration
process is triggered by other components or
additives used in the production of synthetic
plastic materials, such as plasticizers,
lubricants, stabilizers, cellulose, and colorants.
As a result, antifungal resistance tests are
essential for ensuring the longevity and
durability of plastic materials susceptible to
fungal growth.
