• The air separation unit (ASU) is the heart of a
  medical oxygen plant. It is responsible for
  separating air into its constituent parts,
  including oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. The
  process used to separate air is called cryogenic
  distillation, and it involves cooling the air to
  extremely low temperatures and separating the
  gases by their boiling points.
• The oxygen produced by the ASU must meet medical-
  grade purity standards, which require a minimum
  purity level of 99.5.
