Tips to Fall Asleep With Anxiety For Kids

HELLO!
Helping children fall asleep when they're
experiencing anxiety can be challenging, but
there are several strategies that can be helpful.
Here are some tips to assist children in falling
asleep despite their anxiety

TIPS
Establish a bedtime routine
Create a consistent bedtime routine that includes
calming activities such as reading a book, taking
a warm bath, or listening to soothing music. A
predictable routine can help signal to the body
and mind that it's time to relax and prepare for
sleep.
Create a comfortable sleep environment
Ensure that your child's bedroom is a calm and
comfortable space. Use soft lighting, a
comfortable mattress, and cozy bedding to create
a sleep-conducive environment. Consider using
blackout curtains to block out any external
sources of light that may disrupt sleep.
Encourage relaxation techniques
Teach your child relaxation techniques that can
help them unwind before bed. Deep breathing
exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or
guided imagery can help alleviate anxiety and
promote a sense of calmness.

TIPS
Provide reassurance
Before bedtime, talk to your child about their
worries or fears. Offer reassurance and validate
their feelings, letting them know that it's okay
to feel anxious but that they are safe and loved.
Remind them of positive experiences or moments
when they successfully managed their anxiety.
Limit screen time before bed
Electronics emit blue light that can interfere
with sleep. Establish a screen-free period before
bedtime to allow your child's brain to wind down.
Encourage activities like reading, drawing, or
engaging in quiet play instead.
Create a worry jar
Give your child a small jar or box where they can
write down or draw their worries. Before bedtime,
have them place their worries in the jar,
symbolically letting go of them for the night.
This can help externalize their anxieties and
provide a sense of relief.

REMEMBER
It's essential to be patient and understanding
with your child as they navigate their anxiety.
Consistency, reassurance, and a supportive
environment can go a long way in helping them
establish healthy sleep habits and manage their
anxiety.
