What is DMS?
AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) is a cloud
service that makes it easy to migrate relational
databases, data warehouses, NoSQL databases and
other types of data stores. DMS is used to
migrate your data into the AWS Cloud, between
on-premises instances (through an AWS Cloud
setup) or between combinations of cloud and on-
premises setups.

Types of
AWS Database Migrations

• Homogeneous Database Migration
• In this type of migration, the source and target
  database engines are the same or compatible like
  Oracle to Amazon RDS for Oracle, MySQL to Amazon
  Aurora, MySQL to Amazon RDS for MySQL, or
  Microsoft SQL Server to Amazon RDS for SQL
  Server.
• The source database can be in your own premises
  running on an Amazon EC2 or it can be an Amazon
  RDS database. The target can be a database in
  Amazon EC2 or Amazon RDS.

• Heterogeneous Database Migration
• In this type of migration, the source and target
  database engines are different. Oracle to Amazon
  Aurora, Oracle to PostgreSQL, or Microsoft SQL
  Server to MySQL migrations.
• As a first step, use the AWS Schema Conversion
  Tool to convert the source schema and code to
  match that of the target database and use the
  AWS Database Migration Service to migrate data
  from the source database to the target database.
• As the second Step, all the required data type
  conversions get automatically done by the AWS
  DMS during the migration. The target is the
  database in Amazon EC2 or Amazon RDS.
