Title: Connected speech by Abdi Ali Liban

1
Connected speech
  • Do you know why native speakers always speak in a
    fast speech?
  • They speak sentences in connected speech
instead of uttering word by word.
  • For example
  • Instead of saying all the 6 words in the
    sentence below
  • What do you want to do?
  • They make it only three sounds.
  • ? wadya wanna du?

2
Connected speech
  • H deletion
  • I want him to come next week.
  • Did he get it ?
  • It has eight legs.
  • Tell her to call her husband.
  • We have eaten a fried egg .
  • Don't let him insult you.

3
Connected speech
  • He iy
  • Him im
  • Have aaf
  • Has aaz
  • Her aar

4
Elision
  • Elision Examples cam-ra for camera dunno for
dont know kinda for kind of choc-late for cho
colate asp-rin for aspirin hist-ry for history
    temper-ture for temperature math-matics for m
    athematics fam-ly for family"

5
Simplifying consonant clusters
  • This often happens when /t/ or /d/ sounds are
preceded and followed by other consonant sounds,
like /nd/, /stw/, /ld/, etc. For example, its
relatively uncommon (even for highly proficient
English speakers) to pronounce the consecutive
consonants /stw/ between these two words
Last week /stw/ In order to avoid this
difficult combination, we naturally delete the
/t/ sound. This smooths out the transition
Last week ? Last week ? Las week We often
do the same with /d/ sounds between consonants
Old Version ? Old version ? Ol version
