13. AHA and BHA
2AHA and BHA
AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy
Acids) are both common ingredients in cosmetics,
known for their exfoliating properties and
ability to improve skin texture. While they share
some similarities, they differ in their
structure, solubility, and skin penetration,
leading to distinct benefits and
applications. AHAs are water-soluble acids
derived from natural sources like fruits and
sugars. They work primarily on the surface of the
skin, breaking down the bonds that hold dead skin
cells together, promoting cell turnover and
revealing a brighter, smoother complexion. AHAs
are particularly effective in addressing fine
lines, wrinkles, and dull skin. Common AHAs in
cosmetics include glycolic acid, lactic acid, and
malic acid. BHAs, on the other hand, are
oil-soluble acids, most notably salicylic acid.
Unlike AHAs, BHAs can penetrate deeper into the
skin, reaching into pores to dissolve sebum,
unclog pores, and reduce inflammation. This makes
BHAs an excellent choice for treating acne and
oily skin. Salicylic acid is also known for its
anti-inflammatory properties, making it
beneficial for soothing irritated skin.
