Svalbard is a group of islands lying beyond
the Arctic Circle in the Arctic Ocean. The
archipelago represents the northernmost part of
Norway. Its area is 62 thousand km². There is no
arable land on the islands and no trees grow
there. Sixty percent of the territory is covered
by glaciers and snow fields. About 2,800 people
live on Svalbard. The capital and largest city is
Longyearbyen with approximately 2,000
inhabitants. There are no roads on the islands
that connect the settlements. Snowmobiles, boats
and planes are used for transportation. The
official discovery of the archipelago is
attributed to the Dutch explorer William Barents
in 1596. Two thirds of the archipelago is
occupied by seven national parks and 23 nature
reserves. At the end of the 20th century, the
share of tourism in the economy of Svalbard began
to grow significantly.
Svalbard es un grupo de islas que se
encuentran más allá del Círculo Polar Ártico en
el Océano Ártico. El archipiélago representa la
parte más septentrional de Noruega. Su superficie
es de 62 mil km². No hay tierra cultivable en las
islas y allí no crecen árboles. El sesenta por
ciento del territorio está cubierto por glaciares
y campos de nieve. En Svalbard viven unas 2.800
personas. La capital y ciudad más grande es
Longyearbyen con aproximadamente 2.000
habitantes. No hay carreteras en las islas que
conecten los asentamientos. Para el transporte se
utilizan motos de nieve, barcos y aviones. El
descubrimiento oficial del archipiélago se
atribuye al explorador holandés William Barents
en 1596. Dos tercios del archipiélago están
ocupados por siete parques nacionales y 23
reservas naturales. A finales del siglo XX, la
participación del turismo en la economía de
Svalbard comenzó a crecer significativamente.

Súostrovie predstavuje najsevernejšiu cast
Nórska. Jeho rozloha je 62 tisíc km². Na
ostrovoch nie je žiadna orná pôda a nerastú tam
ani žiadne stromy. Šestdesiat percent územia
pokrývajú ladovce a snehové polia. Na Svalbarde
žije asi 2 800 obyvatelov. Hlavné a najväcšie
mesto je Longyearbyen s približne 2000
obyvatelmi. Na ostrovoch neexistujú žiadne cesty,
ktoré by spájali osady. Na dopravu sa využívajú
snežné skútre, clny a lietadlá. Oficiálne
objavenie súostrovia je pripisované holandskému
objavitelovi Viliamovi Barentsovi v roku 1596.
Dve tretiny súostrovia zaberá sedem národných
parkov a 23 prírodných rezervácií. Koncom 20.
storocia zacal významne narastat podiel turizmu
na hospodárstve Svalbardu.
