Title: Understanding Freezer safe plastic containers

1
UNDERSTANDING FREEZER-SAFE PLASTICS
2
Plastic products are of different types and
varieties, depending on the material used to
manufacture the finished product. And today, we
use plastic products for different purposes, from
storing food to freezing it in the freezer.
However, not all types of plastic are
freezer-safe. Thus, if you plan to store and
freeze food in your plastic container and want to
know if it's safe for your food, then this PPT is
for you.
3
HOW TO IDENTIFY FREEZER-SAFE PLASTICS?
Different types of plastics are given a resin
identification code to differentiate between
their type and quality. So, when it comes to
freezer storage, plastics marked with the codes 2
(HDPE), 4 (LDPE), 5 (PP), and sometimes 1 (PET or
PETE) are generally considered safe.
  • HDPE, 2 (High-Density Polyethylene)

This is a durable type of plastic that is used
for storing milk jugs, freezer bags, and even
detergent bottles. This type of plastic doesnt
crack at low temperatures, thus making it an
ideal type of plastic for freezer storage.
  • LDPE, 4 (Low-Density Polyethylene)

This type of plastic is used in grocery bags,
squeezable bottles, and plastic wraps. It is
resistant to low temperatures and also suitable
for short-term freezer use.
  • PP, 5 (Polypropylene)

This is a sturdy type of plastic and is used in
making food containers like yogurt, sauces, and
some types of food takeout containers as well.
This type of plastic is microwave-safe as well.
  • PET or PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

Although this plastic is safe for freezing, it
can become brittle at low temperatures. If you
are using PET plastic containers, then check for
freezer-safe labels on them.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR FREEZER STORAGE
  • Dont fill to the brim

If you are storing food or liquid in your plastic
container, then dont fill it to the brim. Try to
leave some space at the top to avoid leaks or
breakage when they expand upon freezing.
  • Use a vacuum sealer

When you vacuum seal your food, you remove air
from inside and prevent it from getting freezer
burn. This helps to maintain the overall quality
of your food.
  • Thaw safely

When you need to thaw your food, place it in the
freezer to thaw it gradually. Don't directly
place it in the microwave, as it can lead to
uneven results.

Final Thoughts
It is a good idea to understand which plastic
containers are freezer-safe to ensure you don't
damage your freezer or your container and also
don't spoil the quality of your food. Choosing
the right type of freezer-safe plastic containers
can go a long way in ensuring your food remains
fresh inside the freezer for a long time.
