Helen Martin was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1909
to a middle class family. She was always
interested in the arts, and even studied at the
Cleveland Playhouse before getting married and
moving to New York City with her husband in 1937.
In New York, she began her long career in the
entertainment industry.
3Her most famous roles
Helen Martin was best known for her television
roles, most notably playing the nosy neighbor
Pearl Shay on the hit sitcom 227, a role she
played from 1985 to 1990. She also had recurring
roles on classic shows such as Good Times and
Diffrent Strokes. One of her earliest major
roles was in the 1976 film Carrie.
Her memorable performance as Mother Winslow in
the 1989 family comedy Problem Child made her a
household name. She starred opposite John Ritter
and Jack Warden as the exasperated mother trying
to cope with her adopted sons mischievous
behavior.
4Helen Martin was married once to Lawrence Martin
in 1945. The couple had one son, Lawrence, Jr.
Sadly, Lawrence Martin passed away in 1977.
Despite her husbands death, Helen remained
dedicated to her career, appearing in shows like
The Cosby Show and Amen.
