What You Need to Know About Wisdom Tooth Pain
2
Wisdom teeth, the last set of molars to grow in,
often bring along discomfort as they make their
debut. Most people get them in their late teens
or early twenties. However, wisdom teeth often
cause problems because our jaws are not big
enough for them anymore. As humans evolved, our
diet changed and so did the size of our jaws,
leading to less room for these extra molars. When
there isnt enough space, wisdom teeth may become
impacted, causing pain and other dental issues
that need attention from dentists.
Introduction

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF WISDOM TOOTH PAIN
  • Swollen gums around the tooth show a sign of
    discomfort or infection.
  • Tender gums may bleed when you brush or floss,
    indicating possible gum disease.
  • Jaw pain often occurs when a wisdom tooth is
    impacted.
  • Swelling around the jaw can make it look puffy
    and feel stiff.
  • Bad breath that wont go away might come from
decay caused by an impacted wisdom tooth.
  • You may get an unpleasant taste in your mouth
which could be due to infection near the wisdom
    teeth.
  • You may have difficulty opening your mouth if
swelling from an impacted tooth affects jaw
    movement.

CAUSES OF WISDOM TOOTH DISCOMFORT
Feeling pain in the back of your mouth could mean
your wisdom teeth are causing trouble. Often,
they struggle to break through the gums because
theres not enough room. This can make them grow
at odd angles or only partly emerge, which are
called impacted wisdom teeth. The impacted
teeth push against other teeth and this pressure
causes pain and can change how your teeth line
up. Sometimes these troubled molars lead to
other serious issues like tooth decay or gum
disease. Bacteria love tight spaces where theyre
hard to reach with a toothbrush or floss. When
plaque builds up around an impacted wisdom tooth,
it becomes a breeding ground for germs and may
result in painful infections such as
pericoronitis.

HOME REMEDIES TO ALLEVIATE WISDOM TOOTH PAIN
While we recommend visiting a dentist for
effective pain relief, you can try a few options
at home to alleviate the pain. Please note these
remedies may provide temporary relief only.
Extraction may be required to prevent future
complications like overcrowded teeth.
ICE PACK
SALTWATER RINSE
Put an ice pack on your jaw to ease wisdom tooth
pain. Wrap it in a cloth and hold it against your
cheek for 15 minutes. This cold therapy helps
lower swelling and numbs the area. Make sure you
give your skin time to warm up after each session.
Use this method several times a day, especially
after meals, to keep oral hygiene in check. Make
sure the water is not too hot just comfortably
warm will do the job well! With each rinse, swish
the saltwater gently around your mouth for about
30 seconds before spitting it out.

CLOVES
Moving from saltwater rinses, consider cloves as
another natural remedy for wisdom tooth pain.
Clove oil holds powerful anaesthetic and
anti-inflammatory qualities that can provide
relief. To use it, soak a cotton ball in clove
oil and gently press against the sore tooth. This
can help numb the discomfort temporarily.
TEABAGS
Teabags are a handy remedy for calming wisdom
tooth pain. The tannic acid found in tea acts as
an astringent to numb the sore area and decrease
inflammation. Gently press a warm, wet teabag
against the troublesome tooth. Black tea is often
chosen for its high levels of tannin, which is
especially good at providing relief.
