3What is Colon Cancer?
Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer, is a
disease that occurs when cells in the colon or
rectum grow out of control. The colon is the
large intestine, and the rectum is the passageway
that connects the colon to the anus.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill
cancer cells. It's not typically used as the
primary treatment for colon cancer, but it may be
used in combination with surgery or chemotherapy
in certain situations, such as to shrink tumors
before surgery or to relieve symptoms of advanced
cancer.
Immunotherapy drugs help the body's immune system
recognize and attack cancer cells. Pembrolizumab
(Keytruda) and nivolumab (Opdivo) are examples of
immunotherapy drugs that may be used to treat
advanced colon cancer.
Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells or
stop their growth. It can be used before surgery
(neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to shrink tumors,
after surgery (adjuvant chemotherapy) to kill any
remaining cancer cells, or as the primary
treatment for advanced colon cancer.
