2INTRODUCTION
The dental implant treatment involves oral
surgery, and whether you receive local anesthesia
or choose sedation dentistry (oral or IV
sedation) to alleviate dental anxiety or other
issues, you must follow the post-operative
instructions. These techniques promote faster
healing and ensure a successful implant. If you
require sedation, you must arrange for a
responsible adult to drive you to and from our
office and stay in the office during your
treatment.
3Managing Swelling and Discomfort
It is typical to suffer some minor bleeding,
swelling, and discomfort in the hours and days
following oral surgery, but you should notice
improvement within a few days. You may detect red
saliva after your implant treatment. This is
normal and should resolve within a day of your
procedure. If the bleeding continues, please call
us for further advice. An over-the-counter pain
treatment, such as a painkiller can often reduce
discomfort while also reducing swelling.
Prescription pain medication could be an option.
During the first 24 hours, apply ice to the
affected area intermittently to control
swelling. Patients may require antibiotics
following the implant operation. It is critical
to finish the entire course of antibiotics to
reduce the risk of infection and implant failure.
4Eating and Drinking
For the first few days after oral surgery, you
should eat soft foods and avoid hot beverages and
spicy foods. After 3-4 days, you should be able
to resume your normal diet, but avoid biting on
hard objects in the area of the implant until it
is completely healed.
5Oral Care
Proper oral hygiene is necessary for effective
healing, but aggressive cleaning might interrupt
the process. On the day before the operation,
gently brush and floss the region, but do not
rinse. The next day, begin gently rinsing many
times each day with a warm saltwater solution,
particularly after eating. After a few days, you
may need to clean around the implant and abutment
(if any) with a Q-tip and an appropriate cleaning
solution rather than a toothbrush.
6Avoid Future Problems
One of the two most common reasons for implant
failure is damage generated by high pressure, or
biting force, on the implant site. This is why,
even if you have a temporary crown, you should
avoid eating hard foods and chewing in this area.
If you have bruxism, you may need a dental
appliance, such as a bite guard, to safeguard
your teeth over time. Inadequate oral hygiene
is another key concern that may have an impact on
the long-term success of a dental implant.
Patients must immediately follow specific
cleaning guidelines following the implant
operation. You should avoid intense activity for
a few days following surgery and quit smoking for
at least two weeks. Always maintain good oral
hygiene and schedule frequent checkups with our
dentists. If youd like to learn more about
