2Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in the
People's Republic of China. It is the largest
city in Hubei and the most populous city in
Central China, with a population of over 11
million. The name "Wuhan" came from the city's
historical origin from the conglomeration of
Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, which are
collectively known as the "Three Towns of Wuhan".
It lies in the eastern Jianghan Plain, at the
confluence of the Yangtze river and its largest
tributary, the Han River and is known as "Nine
Provinces' Thoroughfare"

9 Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is the first
highway-railway bridge over the Yangtze River. On
the mighty Yangtze with a length of 6,300
kilometers (3,915 miles), there was no bridge for
thousands of years
10 Wuhan lies at the heart of Central China and is
a hub from transportation between the Central
Plain in northern China and the trading ports of
Guangzhou and Hong Kong in southern China. The
Beijing-Wuhan railway line went into full service
in 1906, followed in 1936 by the Wuhan-Guangzhou
railway line. Between that time and the bridge's
completion in 1957, railway cars travelling
between northern and southern China had to be
ferried over the Yangtze on barges, a laborious
and dangerous practice

29The present Yellow Crane Tower is a modern
building that was built in the 1980s after the
old Yellow Crane Tower was destroyed to make way
for the River Bridge that was completed in 1957
30The current structure was built in 1981, but the
tower has existed in various forms from as early
as AD 223. The current Yellow Crane Tower is
51.4 m high and covers an area of 3,219 m2. It is
situated on Snake Hill, one kilometer away from
the original site, on the banks of the Yangtze
River in Wuchang District
31The Yellow Crane Tower stands 51.4 meters (about
168 feet) high
32A tower called the Yellow Crane Tower was built
about 1,800 years ago. It was a famous building
in China. An ancient poem named "The Yellow Crane
Tower" was written by Cui Hao, and many Chinese
can recite it. So, the new park is a popular
tourist destination. The original building was
destroyed ages ago, and other buildings were
built on the original spot and also destroyed.
Some sources say that the last wooden building
was built in the late 1800s. The original site
was on a hill next to the river. The new building
was built on a hill about a kilometer away from
the river. The original building was a pagoda
made of wood, and the new one is pagoda-style
building made of concrete. It is a part of a
small park area on the hill called Snake Hill
Park, and there are some other buildings too

34Mume Garden and Mume-Falling Pavilion at the core
are both inspired by Li Bais famous lines, From
Yellow Crane Tower a jade flute is heard the
tune imbues this riverside city with falling mume
petals. Obviously, Wuhans sobriquet River
City was originated from these lines. As the
flower of Wuhan, mume has been loved for its
bravery and tenacity. Mume blossoms not only add
a new attraction to the park, but even give all
tourists a fresh getaway to enjoy a floral
extravaganza. In each early springexactly the
3rd lunar month, all such trees burst into white
or red blossoms, diffusing a brisk fragrance for
many miles. So, no mume aficionado would miss the
great chance.

39Story of the Yellow Crane Mountain
Wuchangs Snake Mountain used to be called
Yellow Crane Mountain. On the mountaintop there
was a tavern operated by an old couple, Mr Xin
and his wife. They treated others honestly and
the tavern boasted succulent dishes and great
views.
40So, many customers came here and drank hard. A
Taoist came to drink many times, but directly
walked away without paying the bill each time.
Even so, the couple never asked him to pay and
treated him well like other customers even when
he visited again. Time flew so fast. Soon summer
ended and autumn arrived. The Taoist came again
and peeled off orange as he drank. Having
consumed the food for a while, he painted a
dancing yellow crane on the wall with the orange
peel.

After finishing the artwork, he told the couple,
I am going to wander far off. You treated me
very well and I am indebted to you. As a convert,
I have nothing good to offer. But from this day,
you dont need to make wines anymore. Water from
the well behind your house will be good wine in
its own right. Besides, if any customer comes,
clap your hands and the yellow crane will jump
down the wall and begin to dance. As soon as he
finished the words, this priest wandered away.
42At first, the old couple did not believe his
words. So, they got water from the well and
discovered it had become wine indeed. Whats
more, the well-water tasted robust and sweet.
From then on, they treated customers with the
well-water and the painted crane. Such news
spread far and near
43More and more people crowded into the tavern. And
thus, their business became more prosperous than
ever. They made a great deal of money. One year
later, the priest came back. Upon seeing their
benefactor, the couple treated him warmly. The
Taoist drank wine and asked them, How about your
business this year? The man replied, Thanks to
your grace, our business prospered greatly and we
made a lot of money.

44After hearing those words, the priest sighed and
thought, Greed has no limits! He stood up and
unfastened the flute from his waist, playing
several tunes. Soon white clouds fell down and
the crane jumped down to dance. The Taoist rode
the crane and flew away. After he left here, the
well-water, too, was not wine anymore.
45The old couple felt regretful, yet grateful. All
the same, they built a tower as a symbol of
gratitude to the Taoist priest using the earned
money and named it Yellow Crane Tower.
46The Yellow Crane Tower - Millennium Bell The bell
sits on a terrace along the ridge axis east of

The Yellow Crane Tower - Goose Plaque Pavilion
Legend tells that Wang Xizhi, sage of
calligraphy, ever raised his geese below the
Yellow Crane Tower. This pond along with a stele
was thus erected to commemorate the maestro.
50Return of Ninety Nine Cranes, the largest outdoor
granite relief Why was this number used? Because
these plus the crane ridden by the immortal are
100. The original Yellow Crane Tower was ruined
in Tongzhi Period 100 years before the completion
of its modern counterpart. Two 100 stand for a
