has been designed with an innovative bridge
concept

Naples Afragola is an Italian high-speed railway
station near Naples (designed by Zaha Hadid),
that was inaugurated on 6 June 2017, with regular
traffic for passengers starting from 11 June 2017

The station, located in the city of Afragola, in
the Naples metropolitan area, was developed with
the intention of it being serviced by all
high-speed trains on the RomeNaples high-speed
line, aside from those that do not start or
finish at Napoli Centrale station, but instead
operate over the NaplesSalerno high-speed line

Napoli Afragola station was conceived of under a
wider plan which called for the development of 13
new stations at various sections along Italys
existing high-speed rail network

As designed, it is to be operated as a major rail
interchange for Italy's southern region, serving
a total of four individual high-speed lines,
three inter-regional lines, as well as a single
local commuter route

On occasion, the station has been referred to as
being the Gateway to the South and is
considered to be a major transport hub and
regional gateway for Naples

According to Filippo Innocenti, project director
at Zaha Hadid, from the project's onset, the main
station building was envisioned as being built on
a large bridge positioned above all eight of the
tracks and will have four levels with a maximum
height of 25 metres

This is a work of infrastructure which from 2022
will become a true intermodal hub, thanks to the
links between long-distance and regional rail
lines which are to be made shortly the
Naples-Cancello-Frasso Telesino line and the
extension of the Circumvesuviana railway

first phase is 60 million euros

The project also includes an external area of
around 150,000 square metres, featuring green
areas, around 1,400 parking spaces (when
complete), and 53 places for taxis and kissride
drop-offs that also have a reserved lane. Fifteen

Dame Zaha Mohammad Hadid (1950 2016) was an
Iraqi-British architect. She was the first woman
to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in
2004. She received the UK's most prestigious
architectural award, the Stirling Prize, in 2010
and 2011. In 2012, she was made
a Dame by Elizabeth II for services to
architecture, and in 2015 she became the first
and only woman to be awarded the Royal Gold
Medal from the Royal Institute of British
Architects

She was described by The Guardian of London as
the 'Queen of the curve, who "liberated
architectural geometry, giving it a whole new
expressive identity. Her major works include the
aquatic centre for the London 2012 Olympics,
Michigan State University's Broad Art Museum in
the US, the Guangzhou Opera House in China,
Heydar Aliyev Center in Azerbaijan, Bridge
Pavilion in Zaragoza, Spain
