6The high-speed Napoli-Afragola railway station
has been designed with an innovative bridge
concept
7Naples Afragola is an Italian high-speed railway
station near Naples (designed by Zaha Hadid),
that was inaugurated on 6 June 2017, with regular
traffic for passengers starting from 11 June 2017
8Lying above the tracks, its bridge-like
conformation is 400 metres long and 44 wide
9Zaha Hadid (1950-2016) Zaha Hadid's pioneering
vision redefined architecture for the 21st
century and captured imaginations across the globe

12The station, located in the city of Afragola, in
the Naples metropolitan area, was developed with
the intention of it being serviced by all
high-speed trains on the RomeNaples high-speed
line, aside from those that do not start or
finish at Napoli Centrale station, but instead
operate over the NaplesSalerno high-speed line

16Napoli Afragola station was conceived of under a
wider plan which called for the development of 13
new stations at various sections along Italys
existing high-speed rail network
17As designed, it is to be operated as a major rail
interchange for Italy's southern region, serving
a total of four individual high-speed lines,
three inter-regional lines, as well as a single
local commuter route
18On occasion, the station has been referred to as
being the Gateway to the South and is
considered to be a major transport hub and
regional gateway for Naples

20According to Filippo Innocenti, project director
at Zaha Hadid, from the project's onset, the main
station building was envisioned as being built on
a large bridge positioned above all eight of the
tracks and will have four levels with a maximum
height of 25 metres

22This is a work of infrastructure which from 2022
will become a true intermodal hub, thanks to the
links between long-distance and regional rail
lines which are to be made shortly the
Naples-Cancello-Frasso Telesino line and the
extension of the Circumvesuviana railway
23The investment in the tender process for this
first phase is 60 million euros
24The project also includes an external area of
around 150,000 square metres, featuring green
areas, around 1,400 parking spaces (when
complete), and 53 places for taxis and kissride
drop-offs that also have a reserved lane. Fifteen
places are allocated for local and
longer-distance buses

27The central body of the station is 400 metres
long and crosses the tracks like a large bridge,
with an area of 30,000 square metres, it is laid
out over four levels
28When up and running, it is a transport hub that
will serve an urban market of around three
million people

39Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the new train
station Napoli-Afragola is a building in the form
of a bridge whose geometric shape is based on
passenger flow
40A thermal solar system has been included in the
design to produce sanitary water and heating in
the winter

43There are also polyvalent air conditioners which
in spring and autumn and at all times when
external temperatures are not very high, will
perform better than those which use traditional
cooling systems

46The use of these two systems, as well as bringing
unquestionable advantages in terms of energy use
and the saving of numerous tonnes of
CO² emissions, has also meant the elimination of
the production of fluids from methane-burning
boilers, reducing the environmental impact

48The station was conceived to cross the barrier
given by the existing railway by creating an
elevated walkway that integrates the two sides by
straddling the tracks, and offers a second
transit hub in support of the Napoli Centrale
station located ten kilometres south
