Italia Reggia di Caserta 3 Visiting the Palace1

Description:

The Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta) is a former royal residence in Caserta, southern Italy, constructed for the Bourbon kings of Naples. It is one of the largest palaces erected in Europe during the 18th century. In 1997, the palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction of the palace was begun in 1752 for Charles VII of Naples, who worked closely with his architect, Luigi Vanvitelli. The political and social model for Vanvitelli's palace was Versailles. One of the king's primary objects was to have a magnificent new royal court and administrative center for the kingdom in a location protected from sea attack, and distant from the revolt-prone and congested city of Naples. To provide the king with suitable protection, troop barracks were housed within the palace. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Caserta's main attraction is its Royal Palace
(listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The
palace was created in the 18th century by the
Italian architect Luigi Vanvitelli as a
Versailles-like residence ("Reggia") for the
Bourbon kings of Naples and Sicily. It is one of
the most visited monuments in the country. Inside
are more than 1200 rooms, decorated in various
styles. It has been the set for several famous
movies such as Star Wars Episode I The Phantom
Menace, Star Wars Episode II Attack of the
Clones, Angels Demons and Mission Impossible
III.

The palace has 5 floors, 1,200 rooms, including
two dozen state apartments, a large library, and
a theatre modeled after the Teatro San Carlo of
Naples. A monumental avenue that would run 20
kilometers between the palace and Naples was
planned but never realized
In terms of volume, the Royal Palace of Caserta
is the largest royal residence in the world with
over 2 million m³ and covering an area of about
235,000 m²
The palace has a rectangular plan, measuring 247
184 m, and the four sides are connected by
two orthogonal  arms, forming four inner courts

predecessor, the palace was intended to display
the power and grandeur of an absolute Bourbon
monarchy

The Grand Staircase is overlooked by a double
vault with an elliptical opening. The elliptical
vaulted ceiling has a double structure so the
musicians could be seated without being seen, for
either solemn or festive occasion
30
The double elliptical vault presents a great
scenography effect. Inside the vault, on the
planking level, musicians used to play for the
king and his guests when the royal procession,
going up the grand staircase, entered the royal
apartments, creating astonishment among the
guests who heard the music without understanding
from where it was coming. Since the musicians
were inside the vault, the long reverberation
made the listeners perceive the vault to be
enveloped by the music

A spiral staircase to the right of the entrance
leads to the royal tribune and the upper gallery,
which still bears the scars of the aerial
bombardment of 27 September 1943. On the main
altar stands the Immaculate Conception by
Giuseppe Bonito (1707-1789), the only surviving
canvas from those originally commissioned for the
space. In 1948, work began on an intensive
restoration project to return the chapel to its
former glory, encompassing the floors of the nave
and the apse, the tabernacle, the tribunes and
the golden stucco work on the ceiling.
