Italia Reggia di Caserta 6 Visiting the Palace4

Description:

The Royal Palace of Caserta (Reggia di Caserta) is a former royal residence in Caserta, southern Italy, constructed for the Bourbon kings of Naples. It is one of the largest palaces erected in Europe during the 18th century. In 1997, the palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; The construction of the palace was begun in 1752 for Charles VII of Naples, who worked closely with his architect, Luigi Vanvitelli. The political and social model for Vanvitelli's palace was Versailles. One of the king's primary objects was to have a magnificent new royal court and administrative center for the kingdom in a location protected from sea attack, and distant from the revolt-prone and congested city of Naples. To provide the king with suitable protection, troop barracks were housed within the palace. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

The Alexander Room leads into the Old Apartments,
dating back to the eighteenth century. In 1773,
the architect Carlo Vanvitelli (1739-1821) took
over from his father Luigi (1700-1773) to direct
the works in this wing of the palace, which
begins with the rococo grace of the rooms
dedicated to the seasons
