10"It's not the perfect angle that attracts me, and
not even the straight, hard, inflexible man-made
one. What really attracts me is the free and
sensual curve. The curve that represents the
meeting of the mountains of my homeland, the
figure of a beautiful woman, the clouds of the
sky and the waves of the sea. The same curves
which create the Universe. The curved Universe of
Einstein. (Oscar Niemeyer)

The use of straw mats to protect the lemon trees
from the elements The presence of lemons on the
Amalfi Coast is documented in several places from
the eleventh century onwards. However, it was in
the nineteenth century that the lemon took on
great economic and social value/or the whole
area, thanks to the creation of terraced lemon
groves in the surrounding hills.

26Richard Wagner visited the villa in 1880. He was
so overcome by the beauty of the location that he
imagined the setting as the garden of Klingsor in
the second act of Parsifal. In commemoration,
every year the lower garden of Villa Rufolo hosts
a Wagnerian concert.

28The town of Ravello is regarded as one of the
jewels of the Amalfi coast, even though it is
slightly inland. Each summer it holds a renown
music festival. Most of its events are held
alfresco, in the grounds of the famous Villa
Ruffalo. In order to avoid disruption by
inclement weather, and to attract conference
business to the town, it was decided to build the
covered auditorium. In 2000, Oscar Niemeyer was
selected as the architect.
29Villa Cimbrone consists of a historic building
built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Amalfi
Coast, surrounded by a six hectares large parks
