5The island of Capri, one of biggest draws for the
region of Campania, is famous for its intensely
beautiful landscape and scenery. What many
visitors to this lovely island dont know is that
it's also home to some truly extraordinary
churches. The Chiesa Monumentale di San Michele
is one of the most exquisite churches in Campania
and is located right in the historic center of
Anacapri, just a short walk along shop-lined
streets from Piazza Vittoria in the center of town

7The Saint Michael Church in Anacapri, one of the
most precious monuments of the Neapolitan 18th
century school, was founded in 1719. Located on
Piazza San Nicola, it is octagonal in shape and
of Baroque style. The church received a
"monument" designation due to its notable hand
painted ceramic tile floor. Every inch of it is
covered with a grand scene showing the expulsion
of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The
dramatic scene takes place in a lush setting
surrounded by trees, plants and all types of
animals. This wonderfully preserved floor dates
from 1761 and was created by Leonardo Chiaiese,
one of the best ceramic artists working in Naples
in the 18th century

20The magnificent floor dates from 1761 and is the
work of Leonardo Chiaiese, one of the most
important Abruzzo maiolica artesans working in
Naples at the time. Various exotic animals are
depicted somewhat imaginatively an elephant, a
jaguar, a lion, monkeys and a crocodile, all with
remarkably human features. The foreground, near
the main door, represents domestic animals
including goats and cattle
21In the centre is an angel with a flaming sword
driving Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The
devil, in the form of a serpent, is wrapped
around the trunk of the Tree of the Knowledge of
Good and Evil

25The elegance of the Baroque ceiling and dome of
the church, decorated with stucco work and
painted a delicate yellow and white, adding a
light feeling to the inside of the church. This
is one of the finest examples of Neapolitan
Baroque architecture from the 18th century

59In the Christian tradition, a nativity
scene (also known as a manger scene, crib, crèche
is the special exhibition, particularly during
the Christmas season, of art objects representing
the birth of Jesus. While the term "nativity
scene" may be used of any representation of the
very common subject of the Nativity of Jesus in
art, it has a more specialized sense referring to
seasonal displays, either using model figures in
a setting or reenactments called "living nativity
scenes" (tableau vivant) in which real humans and
animals participate. Naples is undoubtedly the
most devoted city to the history and cult of
cribs indeed a 1025 document already reported
about a church of Santa Maria ad presepe
