2Capri is an island located in the Tyrrhenian
Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south
side of the Gulf of Naples. The main
town Capri that is located on the island shares
the name. It has been a resort since the time of
the Roman Republic
3The town of Capri is a commune and the island's
main population centre. From Marina Grande, a
funicular goes up to Capri Town, and boats leave
for the Blue Grotto. The fourth store to the
right of the funicular provides baggage storage
for 2.50/day per bag, from 830-600.

17Legend recounts that in 1380, the father prior of
the Carthusian Monastery of St. James, taken by
surprise by the news of Queen Joan of Anjou
coming to Capri, picked a bouquet of the most
beautiful flowers of the island these remained
in the same water for three days and, as he went
to throw them away, the prior noticed that it had
acquired a mysterious fragrance unknown to him.
So he turned to the friar specialised in alchemy,
who traced the origin of the scent to the
"Garofilium Silvestre Caprese
18History tells that in 1948 the Prior of the
Charterhouse found the old perfume formulae and,
with the permission of the Pope, revealed them to
a chemist from Piemonte in the North of Italy,
and thus created the smallest perfume
laboratory in the world, calling it "Carthusia",
i.e. Charterhouse

30The Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto),
originally known by the name of Krupp Gardens,
are botanical gardens on the island of Capri. The
gardens were established by the German
industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp in the early
twentieth century to build his mansion in Capri
31Initially the gardens took on the name of "Krupp
Gardens", a title held until 1918, when the
gardens were renamed "Gardens of Augustus", the
title they are known as today
32The gardens, designed in terraces overlooking the
sea, can be considered a testament to the rich
flora of the island of Capri, with various
ornamental plants and flowers such as dahlias,
geraniums and brooms

Sundial
38This sundial us a reminder of the importance that
this island attained during the Roman Empire. It
is inspired by one the most exceptional
architectural monuments of ancient Rome, the
"Horologium", built by Augustus in 10 BC in Campo
Marzio, in Rome. By the position of the sun the
sundial measures the passing of time determined
by ancient rules.
Inspired by the "Horologium" it is dedicated to
the sun and has a gnomon like an obelisk. It is
an homage from the people of the island to the
wonderful Capri Sun

47Augustus Gardens - Via Krupp
48The name Friedrich Alfred Krupp (1854 - 1902),
the German steel magnate once known as the
Munitions king is synonymous with the Island of
Capri. The wealthy industrialist's passion for
marine biology brought him to Capri where he
resided for months in a suite of the Grand Hotel
Quisisana. The land which he had purchased for a
future construction bordered the Charterhouse of
San Giacomo and, shortly after the Second World
War this was transformed into the Gardens of
Augustus, a public park with beautiful views of
the Faraglioni and the bay of Marina Piccola

51During the early 1900's, Krupp personally
collaborated with the Naples Zoological Station,
as marine biologist, exploring the seas around
Capri aboard his boat, Puritain. Krupp was
responsible for Via Krupp, the panoramic coastal
path which zigzags its way down the cliffs, from
the Gardens of Augustus all the way to Marina
Piccola. Designed by the talented engineer,
Emilio Mayer, the island's director of public
works at the time, the road opened in 1902.
52In the same year, following accusations of
homosexuality (still a crime at the time),
Friedrich Alfred Krupp was expelled from Italy,
only to die soon after in his home in Essen.
Officially Krupp died for reasons of ill health,
although, many hypothesized suicide as the real
cause of his sudden death
