Shades of Blue 76 Zinaida Serebryakova (1)

Description:

One of the first female artists in Russia to achieve distinction and recognition, Zinaida Serebryakova (1884-1967), deserves to be far better known than she is. One of the most remarkable female artists in Russian history, her long career spanned multiple different styles and international influences. She’s most celebrated for creating colourful, rich, Renoir-esque portraits of Russian life – which now sell for a fortune, snapped up by oligarchs in auction houses – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Zinaïda Evguenievna Serebriakova née Lanceray
(from an old family of French origin), was the
first Russian woman to be recognized as an
important painter. She was born on the estate of
Neskuchnoye near Kursk into one of the most
refined families in the Russian Empire, the
artistic Benois family. Her grandfather, Nicholas
Benois, was a famous architect, chairman of the
Society of Architects and member of the Russian
Academy of Science. Her uncle, Alexandre Benois,
was a famous painter, founder of the Mir
iskusstva art group. Her father, Yevgeny
Nikolayevich Lanceray was a well-known sculptor,
and her mother, who was Alexandre Benois' sister,
had a talent for drawing. One of Zinaida's
brothers, Nikolay Lanceray, was a talented
architect, and her other brother, Yevgeny
Yevgenyevich Lanceray, had an important place in
Russian art as a master of monumental painting
and graphic art. The Russian-English actor and
writer Peter Ustinov was her cousin. Unable to
financially provide for her family in Russia,
Serebriakova left St Petersburg for Paris in
1924, overcoming the devastating effects of the
Russian Revolution and World War I the loss of
her husband, two children, and her own country.
She is buried in the Russian cemetery of
Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, near Paris

The brightest event of that life after life for
Zinaida Serebriakova was, perhaps, a trip to
Morocco. The Belgian Baron de Brouwer saw her
paintings at one of the exhibitions and offered
her to pay for the trip so that he could pick up
any paintings he liked that were painted there.
In 1928 and 1932, Zinaida traveled to Morocco.
Subsequently, she wrote to her daughter Tatiana
In general, 34 years of life here are all fuss,
nervousness and despair ... But how can an artist
create without a joyful excitement? Except
that one month spent in Morocco in 1928, and then
a month and a half there fascinated me completely
with its immediate lively beauty...
