art and its aesthetic, his art its subtleties
and it sensibilities fall well within the

14The structure in my painting tells the viewer
many things beyond the surface says Binh. The
aim in my work is to condense the narrative,
There are never a lot of people in my paintings.
I like minimal subject and the maximum idea just
like Japanese Haiku or Tang dynasty poetry. I
like Haiku very much because it is very simple
and contains many ideas. I have no difficulties
with simplicity but I need a lot of time for a
painting. Sometimes a work on a painting for a
few days, a few weeks, or even years.

Nguyen Thanh Binh was born in 1954 in Hanoi, and
is now based in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). He
graduated from the Hanoi College of Fine Art in
1972, and went on to specialize in oil painting
at the Gia Dinh National College of Fine Art in
Ho Chi Minh City. His paintings are poetic and
perhaps romantic, and at the same time carefully
observed and boldly executed. His use of space
is a very significant factor and an integral part
of his works. His limited use of colour is
equally characteristic of his work, featuring
white, brown, beige, and grey as his signature
tones. Although Thanh Binh has been influenced
by western art and its aesthetics, his art falls
well within the philosophical and aesthetic
sphere of Asia. Nguyen Thanh Binh is an exponent
of the increasing popularity of Vietnamese art.
His work is frequently being exhibited around
Asia, America and Europe. The artist says of his
work "I'm not trying to follow any trends I'm
just searching for beauty as I see it, a beauty
for everyone. The structure in my paintings tells
the viewer many things beyond the surface. The
aim in my work is to condense the narrative. I
like minimal subject and a maximum idea just like
Japanese Haiku
