What is BLS? BLS, or Basic Life Support, is a
level of medical care used for victims of
life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they
can be given full medical care at a hospital. It
includes recognizing emergencies, calling for
help, and performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation) and using an AED (Automated
External Defibrillator).  Why is BLS
Important? In today's world, the need for Basic
Life Support (BLS) skills is more critical than
ever. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading
cause of death globally, with over 350,000
out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occurring
annually in the United States alone . Immediate
and effective bystander CPR can double or triple
survival rates for these victims. However, only
about 46 of cardiac arrest victims receive the
help they need before professional help arrives .
This highlights the importance of widespread BLS
training for individuals across various
professions, including teachers, caregivers,
parents, and healthcare providers. By equipping
more people with BLS skills, we can significantly
increase the chances of survival for individuals
experiencing life-threatening emergencies,
ultimately saving more lives and reducing the
burden on emergency medical services.
4
BLS is vital because it helps maintain blood flow
and oxygenation to the brain and heart during
cardiac arrest or other emergencies. Immediate
BLS can double or even triple a persons chance
of survival. Whether youre a teacher, caregiver,
parent, or healthcare provider, knowing these
skills can empower you to act confidently in an
emergency. BLS Steps for Adults A How-to
Guide Lets break down the BLS steps for adults
into easy-to-follow actions Step 1 Check for
Responsiveness First, ensure the scene is safe
for you and the victim. Then, check if the person
is responsive. Tap their shoulders and shout,
Are you okay? If theres no response, its time
to act.
5
Step 2 Call for Help Immediately call 911 or
direct someone nearby to make the call. If
available, ask for an AED to be brought to the
scene. Step 3 Open the Airway With the person
lying on their back, tilt their head back
slightly and lift their chin to open the airway.
Check for normal breathing by looking at the
chest, listening for breaths, and feeling for
airflow.  Step 4 Provide Chest
Compressions Place the heel of one hand on the
center of the persons chest, then place your
other hand on top and interlock your fingers.
With your shoulders directly over your hands,
press down hard and fast at a rate of 100-120
compressions per minute. Ensure you compress at
least 2 inches deep.
6
Step 5 Provide Rescue Breaths After 30
compressions, give 2 rescue breaths. Pinch the
persons nose shut, cover their mouth with yours,
and blow until you see their chest rise. Each
breath should last about one second. Step 6 Use
an AED if Available If an AED is on hand, turn it
on and follow the prompts. Attach the AED pads to
the persons bare chest and ensure no one is
touching them while the AED analyzes the heart
rhythm. If the AED advises a shock, deliver it,
then immediately resume CPR. Continue performing
CPR, alternating 30 compressions and 2 breaths,
until emergency responders arrive or the person
shows signs of life.
7
Key Tips for Effective BLS Maintain Proper
Form  Correct hand placement and compression
technique are crucial. Stay Calm  Keep your
composure to perform BLS effectively. Practice
Regularly Regular training ensures you stay
prepared.
