'Madonna del Silenzio' Drawings by Michelangelo
Buonarroti c.1538. It is from the Portland
Collection, amassed over centuries by the UKs
aristocratic Cavendish-Bentinck family. The
collection opened a public gallery three years
ago, putting the rarely exhibited piece,
titled Madonna del Silenzio, on display. Another
version of the same composition resides in the
collection of Londons National Gallery.

Bildenden Künste, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte
Antica, Palazzo Corsini and Alte Pinakothek in
Munich. The Leipzig version, the artist's only
signed and dated work (1563), forms the basis for
attributing the related paintings to Venusti

A 16th-century painting was stolen (January 2019)
from a church in Zele, Belgium, just a few days
before it was to be assessed by an expert to find
out whether it is a lost work by the famous
painter Michelangelo. The work depicts Mary,
Joseph and a baby Jesus and was donated 16 years
ago by Etienne Cooreman, a former Belgian
senator. Thieves entered a Belgian church on
Friday and stole a work of art that the pastor
believed was made by Renaissance great
Michelangelo. Though the wood panel painting has
been in the parish for years, its potential Old
Master status was only recently identified,
making it likely that the thieves suspected it
was indeed an authentic Michelangelo. An
authenticator was set to examine the work the day
after it disappeared
A valuable painting attributed to Michelangelo or
Venusti, has been stolen from the Church of St
Ludgerus in Zele, Belgium. The wooden painting
measures 145 x 99 cm without its frame
