Doucs are native to Southeast Asia. With their
five-colour coats, they stand out from the great
family of primates around the world. And so, they
are dubbed the "queen of primates".

One of the most beautiful primates, red-shanked
douc langurs are also referred to as "costumed
apes" for their magnificent colors. The current
population of doucs at Son Tra numbers about
1,300 and zoologists say they have the most
beautiful colours of their species.

Females usually give birth to only one child at a
time between February and June, when fruits are
plentiful. It was observed that an infant can
help deliver itself by pulling on the mother's
fur once its arms are free

With time, the colours of a douc transform and
become complete. Doucs under eight months have a
blackish-blue face, pale chestnut body, gray
tail, and black arms and feet. As a young adult
from eight months to three years, doucs gradually
adopt their five-colour coat pink face, black
head, hands and feet, gray body, white arms and
tail. Most outstanding is their reddish-brown
legs from the knee to the foot

Red-shanked doucs live in groups. The smallest
unit is a family with a male, a female, and a few
infants. A male living with many females can have
up to twenty members

Each family has a male leader. He guards the
other members as they eat and play, and alerts
them when danger is near. He also helps his mate
to rear their children
Each group has its own territory and does not
enter that of its neighbours
25
Other groups comprise several small families with
blood relations

Red-shanked doucs eat almost constantly, though
they are not a gluttonous species. On the
contrary, they are quite fussy about what they
eat.
29
Among the more than 1,000 species of plants at
Son Tra, only about 150 species are consumed by
doucs

length, the red-shanked douc langur has a tail
that can be the same length as its body

Though their potbellies would suggest clumsiness,
the red-shanked douc langur can jump very
gracefully from branch to branch. The baby
clings to its mother from the minute it is born.
Infants are typically carried on the mother's
belly
43
At institutes in Vietnam and around the world,
many scientific works and papers are dedicated to
researching red-shanked doucs at Son Tra. In
addition to the IUCN and the Douc Langur
Foundation (USA), there is the NGO GreenViet
based in Da Nang. Since 2012, GreenViet has led a
movement to protect this rare primate species.

Son Tra (Monkey) Mountain is a breath-taking
national park in Da Nang that stands 693 metres
above sea level. Locally known as the Son Tra
Peninsula, the verdant mountain is also
surrounded by pristine beaches such as Bai Bac,
Bai Nam, Bai But, and Tien Sa Beach.

Legend has it that there were two deities sitting
and playing chess on the Son Tra Mountain for
many consecutive days but they were still
inconclusive. Then one day, one of them lost the
game because of being distracted by fairies who
flew down the beach to take a bath. Out of
control, he kicked the chess board into the sea
and came back to Heaven
51
Therefore, local people had carved a large chess
board on the rock and built the statue of a deity
named De Thich who sits alone in front of the
chess board, thinking carefully about his next
moves
52
The name of the mountain peak Ban Co also came
from that legend, and the beach where the fairies
took a bath was named Tien Sa, now has become the
most beautiful beach in Vietnam

With an area of ??more than 4,400 hectares, Son
Tra is able to regenerate enough oxygen for 4
million people every day, and is a storage of
fresh water for the city and the entire
underground water system in Da Nang and Hoi An.
With its strategic position, Son Tra and Hai Van
are natural shields, reducing the damage from the
storms that annually threaten this central region
