LEFT and R IGHT indicate the left and right
sides of the tractor when facing forward in the
driver's seat. See Illu st. 2.
These are a few facts that you should know about
your tractor.
The illustrations in this manual are num- bered
to correspond with the pages on which they
appear for example , lI lusts. 9 end 9A ore on
page 9.
To tow the tractor, place the transmission range
lever in neutral. Refer to Towing the T raetor.
Never coast the tractor with the engine shut-off.
A variety of optional equipment is avail- able.
Refer to Optional Equi pmenf'. Operating and
maintenance instruction on these items is
included in the instructions for operating or
maintaining the tractor. Disregard in-
structions for equipment not on your traetor.
Change the hydraulic fluid filters at
the specified interval. See Lubricotion Guide.

WORK SAFSLY FO LLOW THESE RULES
This symbol is used to call your attention to
instructions concerning your personal safety. Be
sure to observe and follow these instructions.
A CAREFUL OPERATOR IS THE BEST INSURANCE AGAINST
AN ACCIDENT Check brakes and clutch pedal for
correct operation. Reduce tipping hazards by
spreading.wheels as far as your work program
permits. Be sure muffler and exhaust pipe are in
place so exhaust gases are discharged above the
opera- tor. Always keep the operator's
compartment clean. Keep dirt, trash, and grease
from the pedals, steps, mounting handles,
steering wheel, and controls. Always carry a
Charged fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
Avoid loose-fitting clothing, which could catch
on moving parts. Mounting assist handles and
steps are pro- vided for your safety. Use them
when getting on or off the tractor. STARTING Know
the controls and what they do. Be in the
operator's seat and fasten the seat belt. Place
the transmission and all other controls
in neutral before starting the engine. Be sure
power take-off lever is in the OFF or
disengaged position before starting the engine.
Make sure that the helpers or ob- servers stand
clear of the equipment. Make sure the area is
well ventilated.
SERVICING ANO BEFORE STARTING Carefully supervise
inexperienced operators. When fueling a tractor,
keep any type of open flame away. Do not smoke.
Stop the engine and wait for it to cool before
removing the fuel cap or refueling. Be sure that
the fuel tank cap is fully tightened against the
stop before starting the engine. Check coolant
and engine oil levels, and per- form any other
necessary services, before start- ing the
engine. Turn the radiator cap slowly counter-
clockwise to the pressure release point to allow
the pressure or any steam to escape then press
down on the cap and continue to turn until the
cap is free to be removed.
Power take-off master shield must always be in
place on the tractor. Always keep safety shields
in place.
3
13
WORK SAFELY FOLLOW THESE RULES
Only the operator should ride on the tractor. He
should sit on the seat with the seat belt
fastened.
When transporting equipment on the highway, it is
recommended that a safety chain with a rating
greater than the gross load of the towed
equipment, be used. Be sure hitches and/or
drawbars are properly stabilized before towing
equipment.
No riders allowed. Make certain that everyone is
clear of machinery before starting the engine or
operation. Use the drawbar when hitching to a
heavy load.
Be courteous, have consideration for other
traffic using the road.
BEFORE DISMOUNTING Always wait for the tractor to
come to a com- plete stop, disengage the PTO,
lower equipment to the ground, place the
transmission and all other controls in the
neutral position, engage the park brake so the
tractor will not roll, shut off the engine, and
remove the key to avoid unauthorized operation
when leaving the tractor. DISMOUNTING
Pull only from drawbar never hitch to axle
housing.
Always keep the tractor in gear when going down
hills. A towed implement having a gross weight
greater than the weight of the towing tractor
must be equipped with its own brakes.
Always avoid sudden starts, excessive speed, and
sudden stops.
Check overhead clearance carefully before driving
under power lines, guy wires, bridges, low
hanging tree branches, entering or leaving
building, etc. To assure the protection provided
by design, the protective structure must not be
altered by welding, cutting, drilling, or in any
other manner. TRANSPORTING
Use the assit handles and steps provided, step
out of the operator's area backwards.
CAUTION! Do not attempt to step out of the
operator's area face forward or you may fall.
AFTER AN UPSET
No attempt should be made to straighten, weld or
otherwise repair the protective frame for further
service. It must be replaced in its
entirety. NOTE Do not operate the tractor or run
the engine until a thorough inspection has been
made to determine that all components, controls,
sys- tem, etc. are operating correctly. The
tractor must be inspected for other damage,
preferably, by your International Harvester
dealer, and all necessary corrections made.
Before moving on public roads, or from field to
field, lock the brake pedals together for
simultaneous operation. Reduce speed when
traveling on rough roads, sharp turns, and down
steep hills. Avoid heavily-traveled roads when
moving equipment, if at all possible.
Use warning devices (i.e. flags, S.M.V. em- blem,
lights, etc.) which are approved for use by your
local government agencies, when moving equipment
on public roads. Keep these devices clean and in
good working condition.

COOLING SYSTEA Never start or operate the engine
without first checking to see if the radiator is
filled to the proper level, with the correct
solution of permanent anti-free ze. Refer to
Cooling System. Traetors shipped in the United
States and Canada have the cooling system filled
with anti-f reeze. FUEL SYSTEM Refer to
"Gasoline or Diesel Engine and Fuel System".
TI' CTOR BREAK- IH PROCEDUR E Never operate an
engine immediately uiler full load. Break it in
carefully aS shown in the table. Do not overload
the en- giie at any time. Allow engine to warm
up before operating at full load. If engine
coolant temperature rises above range.on
temperature gauge, and coolant level in radiator
is correct, shift to lower gear.

DRIVING THE TRACTOR (Synch romesh Tran smi ssion)
PREPARING THE TRACTOR FOR EACH DAY'S \fORK Check
the level of the coolant in the ra- diator. Refer
to "Cooling System".
NOTE Do not fill the tank to its full capac-
ity as space is required for vapor expansion in
the event of a temperature change. A tank filled
to capacity may overflow if exposed to a rise in
temperature or direct sunlight.
Check the oil level in the engine c rank- case.
Also lubricate the chassis points rec- ommended
for daily service. Refer to "Lubrication Guide"
and "Lubrication Table". Inspect the tires for
general condition. FUEL GAUGE (Gasoline and
Diesel)
The fuel tank has air vent tubes. These vents
should be kept open at all times to assure proper
flow of the fuel.
SUSPEHSIOH SEAT
When the key switch is turned on, the fuel gauge
indicates the level of the ft'.e1 in the fuel
tank. NOTE An in-line fuse holder with AGC-1 amp
fuse located at fuel gauge receiving unit is
provided to prevent damage to fuel gauge sending
unit if any incorrect connection is made on fuel
gauge. It is important to use the same capacity
fuse for replacement. If fuel gauge fails to
function check the fuse. NOTE The key must be
left in the "ON" position while the engine is
running so the fuel gauge will function. FILLING
THE FUEL TAHK
CAUTION! Never remove the fuel tank cap or fill
the fuel tank when the engine is running, is hot,
or when near on open flame. Do not smoke when
working around inflammable fuel as the air around
the tractor is mixed with highly explosive
vapor. When pouring fuel, keep the container or
hose nozzle in contact with the metal of the fuel
tank to avoid the possibility of an electric
spark igniting the fuel.
  1. - Wei ght odt uster
  2. - Adj u stment I ever

The suspension seat
(Illusf. 8) g1ves the
operator the maximum in driving comfort.
Fill the fuel tank at the rear of the tractor,
preferably at the end of each day's work. This
will force out any moisture-laden air and prevent
condensation.
The suspension seat is mounted on slide- rails
and is quickly and easily adjusted by means of
the seat adjustment lever.

DRIVING THE TRACTOR (Synchromesk Tran smi ssion)
Adl u Sting the eaf to Sui I fhe Operator s
\ei ght The seat suspension (lllust. 8) is ad-
justable to suit the weight of any operator from
100 to 250 pounds. To adjust the sus- pension the
operator turns an adjuster knob to move a pointer
at the base of the handle toward the " to
compensate for a heavy operator and toward the '
-" to compensate for a light operator. The
adjustment is re- versed by pulling the knob
axially outward and rotating it 180 degrees.
Couti on! Al ways I otch IN e broke pedal
together before dri vi ng the troc tor at hi gh
speed.
To latch the pedals together engage the latch
into the slot in back of the right pedal . See
lllust. 9A. When the brake pedals are not latched
together , the latch should rest in the slot in
back of the lett brake pedal.
STEERING THE TRACTOR The tractor is steered in
the conventional manner by means of the
steering wheel ac- tuating the power steering
system however , to make a sharp or pivot turn,
press the right or left brake pedal, depending
on the direction in which the turn is to be
made. The brake pedals must be unlatched so
they can be operated individually .
1 - BraLe pedal I otch
Illust. 9A Broke pedal s in the locked posit ion.
USIHG THE BRAKES
THE TRAC TOR IS EQUIPPED WITH HY- DRAULICA LLY
ACTUATED OIL COOLED DISC BRAKES
The brake pedals are used to stop the tractor or
to assist in making sharp turns as outlined below
. The brake pedal latch (lllust. 9A) is used to
latch both brake pedals together , causing the
brakes to operate simultaneously. To stop the
tractor , depress both pedals at the same time
. To assist in making a sharp turn , operate the
pedals individually , depressing the pedal on the
side toward which the turn is to be made .
SAFETY STARTING S\fITCft
The safety starting switch is located at the left
side of the tractor in front of the clutch pedal.
It serves to prevent moving the tractor
accidentally with the cranking motor.
The switch moves to the closed contact position
when the clutch pedal is depressed all the way.
This permits completion of the circuit to the
eranking motor for starting the engine.
