m a intenance instr ucti ons for the
International 484, 584, 684, 784 and Hydro 84
Tractors. Thi s material has been prepared in
deta i I to help the operator toward a better un
derstandin g of
the tractor. Throughout the manual the terms
LEFT, RIGHT, FRONT and REAR are to be taken
a s applicable to a person seated in the driving
seat and facing the radiator.

ACCIDENT. No one should operate this machine whi
ie under the influence of intoxicants or drug s
(med ica- t ions) that impa ir the senses or

container. B. Never remove the fuel tank cap or
fil I the f uel tank when the engine is running,
hot, or indoors. A I so, do not smoke when work

TRACTOR and IMPLEMENT OPERATOR'S MANUAL
THOROUGHLY.
Any person who operates the tractor mu st be i
nstructed in the safe operation of the uni t, its
attachments and at I controls. An operator
musi be capable of safel y operating a II control
s of the tractor and its attachmen ts. Use the
step and assist handles when mountinp or di
smounting from the tractor and from the left side
om y. Wear sturdy, rough sol ed work shoes and cI
ose- f it ting s lacks and shirts to avoid
entanglement in the moving parts. Never operate
a tractor i n bare feet, sanda Is , or snea
kers. C lean dirt, trash, and grease from
operator's platform, pedal s, steps, and steer
ing w heel to prevent fal Iing from the machine
or Ioss of con- trol which cou Id resul t in seri
ous injury. Adjust tractor wheel s to the w ide
st practical setting to reduce the possi bi
lity of t ipping. Stop the power take-off, depres
s clutch pedal, and shift i nto neutra I before
start ing the eng i ne. Ensure that observers or
assistants are well clear of the machine and
equipment.

Wherever poss ible remove the radiator cap onl y
when the engine is stopped and cool to avoi d
poss ibi Iity of severe burns or scal
ding. Hydraulic fl uid escaping under press ure c
an have enough force to penetrate the skin.
Hydraulic f luid ma y also infect a minor c ut or
open ing in the skin. IF INJURED BY ESCAPING
FLUID, SEE A DOCTOR AT ONCE. Serious infection or
reaction can result if medical treatment i s not
given immediately. Make s ure a II connections
are tight and that hoses and Iines are in good
condition before applying pressure to the s
ystem. Rel ieve al I pressure before disconnec- t
ing the Iines or performing other work on the
hydraulic system. To find a leak under pressure
use a piece of cardboard or wood. Never use h
ands. Ensure that exhaust muffler is
securely in posi tion so that exhaust gases are
discharged above the operator. Always carry a
full y charged fire extinguisher and
comprehensive first a id k it. To assure the
protection provided by design the protective
structure must not be dri lied, welded, cut or aI
tered in any way.
DURING OPER ATION Keep machine in good operating
C ondit ion and keep safety dev ices in pl ace.
Use g uards or shields as instructed in
Operator's Manual. To prevent injury, do not
carry passengers or give rides. Keep chi Idren,
pets and by-standers out of the area. Only the
operator should ride on the tractor and onIy i n
the seat, w ith the seat belt fastened. Check brak
es and clutch pedal for correct operation.
Do not run the engine in confined area s such as
storage bui Idings any longer than i s
necessary for immediate mov ing of the tractor
out of or into the area. EXHAUST GASES ARE TOXIC.

dismounting the tractor. Stop the machine and
inspect for damage after striking an object.
Repa ir any damage before restarting and
operating the mac hine. Watch out for traffic
when near or cros sing road- ways.

VENTILATION. CAUTION! Check overhead clearance
carefully before entering or leaving
buildings, drivi ng under power Iines, guy
wires, br idges, low hang ing tree branches or

in ser ious injury.
Before backing the tractor always look for obstac
Ies or b y-standers in the area where the tractor
wi II move.
Never direct di scharge of material from any
attach ment toward by-standers n or al low an yon
e i n the area of the m achine whi Ie i n
operation. Use care when pul ling Ioads or us ing

points. B. Li mit Ioads to those you can s afel y
c ontrol . C . Don't turn too sharp, and use c

TRANSPORTING Use f lags, S.M.V. emb lem, Iights,
a nd/or other warning dev ices which are approved
for use by your Iocal government a genc ies, w
hen moving equipment on publ ic roads. Keep these
dev ices c lean and in good working condition. Be
sure hitches and/or drawbars are properly stabi
Iized before tow ing equipment to reduce
possibility of loss of control and upset or
colIision, Di sengage power to any attachment
when trans- porting or not in use. Avoid heav i
Iy-travel led roads when mov ing e quipment, if
at al I possi ble. When moving on publ ic roads ,
or from f ield to field, lock brake pedals
together for simult- aneous operation when making
a stop.

greater than that of the towing tractor must have
its own brakes. Whenever poss i ble, avoid driv

or s lope. If necessary to move the tractor on an
inc Ii ne, whenever practical back the tractor up
the i ncl ine and dr ive the tractor forward down
the i nc I ine. Use extreme caut ion if it i s
necessary to dri ve the tractor up an inc Iine
or back the tractor down an inc Iine because the
front of the tractor coul d Iift and rapidIy fl
ip over bac kward whi ch could cause serious
injury. Stay alert for holes, roc ks, tree stumps
and other hazards in terrain which could cause an
upset or loss of control which could result in
injury. Shift transmi ssion to neutral and set
park brake, turn off power to any attachments,
stop engine and remove the key before leav ing
operators seat to make any repa irs or
adjustments, to
Reduce speed when travel Iing on rough roads to
avoid loss of control and upset or col Ii s
ion. Be courteous, have c ons iderat ion for
other traffic us ing the road. Drive defensive iy.
AFTER OPERATING Lower equipment to the ground
before Ieaving tractor to avoid the poss ibi I
ity of the equipment dropping and caus ing
injury. To reduce the poss ib iI ity of
unattended move- ment of the tractor or its use
by unauthori zed operators which could result in
acc ident and injury, always disengage the power
take-off, shift transmi ssion into neutra I, set
the parking brake, stop the engine, and remove
ignition key when leaving the machine
unattended.

DISMOUNTING Step backward from the operating
areas , and from the left s ide onl y. CAUTION
Do not step forward from the operating
compartment. To do so may result in a fal I .
or otherwise repair the protective frame. It
must be replaced in its entirety.
NOTE Do not operate the tractor or run th e
engine unti I a thorough i nspection has been
made to determine that all control s, systems
etc. are operating correctl y. The tractor must
be inspected for other damage preferably by an
International Harvester dealer and al I necessary
corrections made.

TACHOMETER This instrument revolutions per
GOVERNED SPEED FOR SOME MINUTES. IF THE LIGHT
STILL DOES NOT GO OUT STOP THE ENGINE AND CONSULT
AN INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER DEALER.
records the engine speed in minute and aIso
records the
approximate engine hours run. The correct PTO
speed i s indic ated when the needle reg i-
sterm on the PTO line marIed on the face of the
instrument. On gear drive tractors a speed c hart
transfer i s provided to show the tractor speed
in each gear pc sition at selected engine speed.
These transfer! are available to suit different
tire s ize.
Parki ng Bra ke Warn ing Light This red Ii ght w
iII be on when the auxi Ii aries are energised if
the parking brake i s a ppl ied. The par Icing
bra ke must be comple teIy re lea sed an d the
warning I ight off before m oving the tractor.
LIGHT SL'ITCH This switch has four positions. OFF
position f irst posit i on c lockw i se - f la
shing hazard I ights second pos iti on c I

Alternator Warning Light This red li ght w iII
glow when the Iey i s t urned to the first pos
iti on but s hould be extingu ished whe n the eng
ine is running above Iow idIe, thus i ndicatin g
tha t the a Iternator i s c harg i ng the
battery. If the I ight continues to glow when the
eng ine i s running above low idle the charg- i
ng c irc uit s hould be chec ked to determine
the fa i lure.
WARNING LIGHT PANEL

THE FLUID LEVEL. CHECK THAT THE OIL COOLER IS
NOT BLOCKED THEN RUN THE ENGINE ON REDUCED LOAD
AT RATED
