WORK SAFELY - FOLLOW THESE RULES
This symbol is used to call your attention to
instructions conœrning your personal safety. Be
sure to observe and follow thèse instructions. A
CAREFUL OPERATOR IS THE BEST INSURANCE AGAINST AN
ACCIDENT Be sure muffler and exhaust pipe are in
place so exhaust gases are discharged above the
operator. Always keep the operator's compartment
clean. Keep dirt, trash, and grease from the
pedals, steps, mounting handles, steering wheel,
and controls. Always carry a Charged" fire
extinguisher and a first aid kit. Avoid
loose-fitting clothing, which could catch on
moving parts. Mounting assist handles and steps
are provided for your safety. Use them when
getting on or off the tractor. STARTING
Know the controls and what they do. Be in the
operator's seat and fasten the seat belt. Place
the transmission and all other controls in
neutral before starting the engine.
SERVICING AND BEFORE STARTING Carefully supervise
inexperienced operators.
When fueling a tractor, keep any type of open
flame away. Do not smoke. Stop the engine and
wait for it to cool before removing the fuel cap
or refueling.
Be sure power take-off lever is in the "OFF or
disengaged position before starting the engine.
Make sure that the helpers or observers stand
clear of the equipment.
Be sure that the fuel tank cap is fully tightened
against the stop before starting the engine.
Make sure the area is well ventilated.
DURING OPERATION Carefully supervise
inexperienced operators.
Check coolant and engine oil levels, and perform
any other necessary services, before starting the
engine.
Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can have
enough force to penetrate the skin. Hydraulic
fluid may also infect a minor cut or opening in
the skin. If injured by escaping fluid, see a
doctor at once. Serious infection or reaction can
result if medical treatment is not given
immediately. Make sure all connections are tight
and that hoses and lines are in good condition
before applying pressure to the system. Relieve
all pressure before disconnecting the lines or
performing other work on the hydraulic system. To
find a leak under pressure use a small piece of
cardboard or wood. Never use hands.
Turn the radiator cap slowly counter- clockwise
to the pressure release point to allow the
pressure or any steam to escape then press down
on the cap and continue to turn until the cap is
free to be removed.
Check brakes and clutch pedal for correct
operation.
Reduce tipping hazards by spreading wheels as far
as your work program permits.
11
WORK SAFELY FOLLOW THESE RULES
Be sure power take-off lever is in the OF F or
disengaged position before starting engine.
Disengage P.T.O. and shut-off the engine before
adjusting or unclogging power driven machinery.

Before starting engine make sure helpers or ob-
servers stand clear of equipment.
Only the operator should ride on the tractor. He
should sit on seat. If the tractor has roll over
protective frame, he should sit on the seat with
the safety belt fastened.
Operate the engine only in well ventilated
areas. Release park brake completely prior to
moving tractor.
Keep others, especially children, from riding on
steps, fenders, or drawbar, and away from tractor
and equipment.
Be sure muffler and exhaust pipe extensions are
in place so exhaust gases are discharged above
operator. Check overhead clearance carefully
before driving under power lines, guy wires,
bridges, low hanging tree branches, entering or
leaving buildings, etc.
Always keep the tractor in gear when going down
steep hills. A towed vehicle having a gross
weight greater than the weight of the towing
tractor must be equipped with its own
brakes. Always avoid sudden starts, excessive
speed, and sudden stops.
DURlNGOPERATION Hydraulic fluid escaping under
pressure can have enough force to penetrate the
skin. Hydraulic fluid may also infect a minor cut
or opening in the skin. If injured by escaping
fluid, see a doctor at once. Serious infection or
reaction can result if medical treatment is not
given immediately. Make sure all connections are
tight and that hoses and lines are in good
condition before applying pressure to the system.
Relieve all pressure before disconnecting the
lines or performing other work on the
hydraulic system. To find a leak under pressure
use a small piece of cardboard or wood. Never use
hands.
Carefully supervise inexperienced operators.
Stop the engine before leaving the tractor and
engage the park brake.
To assure the protection provided by design, the
protective structure must not be altered by
welding, cutting, drilling, or in any other
manner.
After an upset, no attempt should be made to
straighten, weld, or otherwise repair the
protective frame for further service. It must be
replaced in its entirety.
Power take-off master shield must always be in
place on the tractor. Use the drawbar in lowest
position when hitching to a heavy load, such as
manure spreaders, loaded two-wheel trailers, and
heavy wagons.
NOTE Do not operate the tractor or run the
engine until a thorough inspection has been made
to determine that all components, controls, etc.
are operating correctly. The tractor must be
inspected for other damage, preferably by your
International Harvester dealer, and all necessary
corrections made.
Pull only from drawbar never hitch to axle
housing.
Shift transmission to neutral and set park brake
before dismounting from tractor for any
reason. Always keep safety shields in place.
Always use the seat belts, if they are furnished
with the unit. However, do not install seat belts
if the tractor has no rollover protective
structure.

TRACTOR BREAK-IN PROCEDURE
or by other means, not only affects traveling
speeds but affects the life of matching parts and
voids the company responsiblity as outlined in
the warranty. LUBRICATION Lubricate the en tire
tractor, using the Lubrication Guide" and the
Lubrication Table" for reference. Check the oil
levels. Refer to "Lubrication".
Never operate an engine immediately under full
load. Break it in carefully as shown in the
table. Do
not overload the engine at any time.
Allow engine to warm up before operating at full
load. If engine coolant temperature rises above
range on temperature gauge, and coolant level in
radiator is correct, shift to lower gear.
TIRES Check the air pressures. See the tables for
front and rear tire inflation pressures. AIR
CLEANI?IG SYSTEM Refer to "Aii Cleaning System".
ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM
Period Engine Speed Control Lever Position Load
1st Hour Fully advanced Maintain engine speed 100 RPM above full load governed speed.
2nd Through Sth Hours Fully advanced Full load gov- erned speed with occasional short periods of lighter load.
Never start or operate the engine without first
checking to see if the radiator is filled to the
pro- per level, for the prevailing temperature,
with soft or rain water or anti-freeze. Refer to
"Cooling System". Tractors shipped in the United
States and Canada have the cooling system filled
with anti- freeze.
The engine is filled with shipping oil. During
first 100 hours of operation do not overload or
idle engine for prolonged periods. Hydraulic
filter ele- ments must be changed as specified in
Lubrica- tion Guide".

DRIVING THE TRACTOR
(Synchromesh Transmission)
PREPARING THE TRACTOR FOR EACH DAY'S WORK
NOTE Do not fill the tank to its full capacity
as space is required for vapor expansion in the
event of a temperature change. A tank filled to
capacity may overflow if exposed to a rise in
temperature or direct sunlight.
Check the level of the coolant in the radiator.
Refer to "Cooling System".
Check the oil level in the engine crankcase. Also
lubricate the chassis points recommended for
daily service. Refer to "Lubrication Guide" and
"Lubri- cation Table".
The fuel tank has air vent tubes. These vents
should be kept open at all times to assure proper
flow of the fuel.
Inspect the tires for general condition.
SUSPENSION SEAT
FUEL GAUGE (Gasoline and Diesel) When the key
switch is turned on, the fuel gauge indicates the
level of the fuel in the fuel tank. NOTE An
in-line fuse holder with AGC-1 amp fuse located
at fuel gauge receiving unit is provided to
prevent damage to fuel gauge sending unit if any
incorrect connection is made on fuel gauge. It is
important to use the same capacity fuse for
replacement. If fuel gauge fails to function
check the fuse. NOTE The key must be left in the
"ON" position while the engine is running so the
fuel gauge will function.
  1. - Weight adjuster
  2. - Adjustment lever

FILLING THE FUEL TANK
The suspension seat gives the operator the maxi-
mum in driving comfort.
CAUTION! Never remove the fuel tank cap or fill
the fuel tank when the engine is running, is hot,
or when near an open flame. Do not smoke when
working around in- flammable fuel as the air
around the tractor is mixed with highly explosive
vapor. When pouring fuel, keep the container or
hose nozzle in contact with the metal of the fuel
tank to avoid the possi- bility of an electric
spark igniting the fuel.
The suspension seat is mounted on sliderails and
is quickly and easily adjusted by means of the
seat adjustment lever.
Adjusting the Seat to Suit the Operator's Weight
The seat suspension is adjustable to suit the
weight of any operator from 100 to 250 pounds
(45.4 to 113.0 kg). To adjust the suspension the
operator turns an adjuster knob to move a pointer
at the base of the handle toward the "" to
compensate
Fill the fuel tank at the rear of the tractor,
prefer- ably at the end of each day's work. This
will force out any moisture-laden air and prevent
condensa- tion.

for a heavy operator and toward the - to com-
pensate for a light operator. The adjustment is
re- versed by pulling the knob axially outward
and rotating it 180 degrees.
To assist in making a sharp turn, operate the
pedals individually, depressing the pedal on
the side toward which the turn is to be made.
CAUTION! Always latch the brake pedal together
before driving the tractor at high speed.
STEERING THE TRACTOR
The tractor is steered in the conventional manner
by means of the steering wheel actuating the
power steering system however, to make a sharp
or pivot turn, press the right or left brake
pedal, depending on the direction in which the
turn is to be made. The brake pedals must be
unlatched so they can be operated individually.
To latch the pedals together engage the latch
into the slot in back of the right pedal. When
the brake pedals are not latched together, the
latch should rest in the slot in back of the left
brake pedal.
SAFETY STARTING SWITCH
The safety starting switch is located at the left
side of the tractor in front of the clutch pedal.
It serves to prevent moving the tractor
accidentally with the cranking motor.
USING THE BRAKES
TH E TRACTOR D RAU LICAL LY DISC BRAKES.
IS EIUIPPED WITH HY ACTUATED OIL COOLED
The switch moves to the closed contact position
when the clutch pedal is depressed all the way.
This permits completion of the circuit to the
cranking motor for starting the engine.
The brake pedals are used to stop the tractor or
to assist in making sharp turns as outlined below.
The brake pedal latch is used to latch both brake
pedals together, causing the brakes to operate
simultaneously. TRANSMISSION RANGE AND SPEED
LEVERS NOTE The transmission has a RANGE LEVER
that must be used only when the TRACTOR IS
STANDING STILL. The transmission SPEED LEVER can
be shifted with the TRACTOR IN MOTION by
disengaging the clutch.
The transmission range lever and the transmission
speed lever are used to select four forward
speeds in the HIGH range and four in the LOW
range. See Ground Speed table.
1 - Brake pedal latch
Brake pedals in the locked position.
NOTE Before moving the tractor the park brake
must be released (down) and park brake tellite
off to avoid possible damage to brake and trans-
mission.
To stop the tractor, depress both pedals at the
same time.
10
16
DRIVING THE TRACTOR (Synchromesh
Transmission) With the clutch pedal in the
disengaged position, move the transmission range
lever to the desired range, "High", "Low", or the
"Reverse". The range lever must always be
returned to "Neutral" before pushing it straight
forward for "Low" range, straight back for
"Reverse" or pulled towards the operator, at the
neutral offset in the quadrant and then pushed
straight forward for "High" range. Then move the
speed lever to the desired speed. CAUTION! There
is no "NEUTRAL" position provided for the
transmission speed lever. Start the tractor in
motion by slowly releasing the clutch pedal and
advancing the engine speed con- trol lever to a
position where the engine operates best for the
load to be handled.
  1. - First speed

NOTE The synchromesh transmission tractor has
been designed with synchronizers in the trans-
mission speed gears and therefore can be shifted
with the tractor in motion by disengaging the
clutch and applying a steady and continuous pres-
sure to the speed lever until the shift is
complete. Under normal conditions this action is
instanta- neous. Sometimes difficulty is
experienced in shifting the speed lever on a
synchromesh trans- mission when the tractor is
standing still. Under these conditions the same
continuous pressure should be applied to the
speed lever and at the same time the clutch
should be engaged slightly. This will give
sufficient rotation of the synchro- nizer and
allow the shift to be completed without
difficulty. Transmission range gears should be
selected when the tractor is not in motion.
Transmission Range and Speed Levers.
ACCELERATOR PEDAL (Optional)
The accelerator pedal is used when making fre-
quent changes of tractor speeds. Pressing down
with the foot increases the speed of the engine.
The engine speed control lever should be retarded
when the accelerator pedal is to be used.
STARTINGTHETRACTOR
Do not "ride" the clutch or brake pedals by
resting the feet on the pedals while driving the
tractor because this will result in excessive
wear on the linings.
Start the engine. Refer to "Engine and Fuel Sys-
tem".
Advance the engine speed control lever to the low
idle position.
DI FFERENTIAL LOCK
A pedal at the rear of the foot plate on the
right side of the tractor is operated by heel
pressure to engage and hold in engagement the
diNerential
Disengage the park brake. Hold the tractor with
the brakes if necessary. Disengage the clutch.

seconds, depress the engine clutch pedal momen-
tarily and the differential lock will come into
operation immediately.
lock. The dowel pin-type coupling, locks the dif-
ferential gears so the rear wheels cannot turn at
different speeds. This prevents one wheel from
spinning out and stalling the tractor when wet
spots or slippery surface conditions are encoun-
tered.
If the differential lock does not disengage when
the foot is taken off the pedal, as evidenced by
the pedal remaining in the depressed position, a
quick pressure on one of the brake pedals, or a
momen- tary depressing of the clutch pedal will
relieve the torque through the differential lock
so that the springs can move the coupling out of
engagement. The pedal will remain in the
depressed position until the differential lock
has been disengaged.
The differential lock is also useful in
preventing unequal drive wheel slip when one
wheel is oper- ating under poorer traction
conditions than the other. Continual engagement
of the differential lock is not harmful to the
wearing parts and may result in improved
performance of the tractor and draft control
system even when excessively un- equal slip is
not apparent. However, the differential lock must
be disengaged before attempting turns.
STOPPING THE TRACTOR Disengage the clutch and
move the transmission range lever to the neutral
position. Use the brakes if necessary.
CAUTION! The differential lock should not be
engaged when driving on the road or at high
speeds. Do not engage the dif- ferential lock
when turning the tractor. If the lock is engaged
when turning, there could be a loss of steering
control.
CAUTION! Always engage the park brake when the
tractor is parked. To en- gage the park brake
move the park brake handle upward toward the
operator. Do not engage the park brake while the
tractor is in motion.
PARK BRAKE The park brake is used to lock the
transmission after the tractor is stopped. This
prevents the trac- tor from moving.
1 - DiNerential lock pedal Differential lock
pedal.
The pedal may be deprssed to engage the
differen- tial lock under wheel slip or when the
tractor is still in motion. A spring-loaded
safety device has been incorporated to prevent
too-forceful engage- ment. If one wheel is
spinning too rapidly for the differential lock to
engage, a clicking noise will be

DRIVING THE TRACTOR (Synchromesh Transmission)
The park brake is engaged when the handle is
moved upward toward the operator. Always engage
the park brake when leaving the tractor.
When a tractor is "stuck", the power of both
tractors should be used, and a steady even pull
maintained by the towing tractor.
NOTE When towing the tractor gound speed should
not exceed 20 miles per hour (32.2 km/h).
The park brake is released by depressing the
latch under the handle grip and moving the brake
handle down.
NOTE Do not attempt to start the engine either
by "freewheeling" or "towing" the tractor.
NOTE Before moving the tractor the park brake
must be released (down) and park brake tellite
off to avoid possible damage to brake and trans-
mission.
TACHOMETER
This instrument indicates the engine r.p.m.
which provides a means of setting the engine
speed for power take-off operations. Engine
hours of operation are also recorded.
TOWING THE TRACTOR
NOTE I f the tractor is to be towed for any
reason, the engine must be running to provide
transmission lubrication, brakes, and power
steering. If the engine cannot be run, check to
see that the fluid level in the transmission case
is at the "FULL" mark on the transmission oil
level gauge, then add four gallons (15.1 L) of
IH Hy-Tran fluid into the transmission case.
After towing the tractor, drain the added four
gal- lons (15.1L) of fluid so the fluid level in
the trans- mission case is again at the "FULL"
mark on the transmission oil level gauge. Refer
to "Lubrica- tion". When towing is necessary,
use a tow chain, and have an operator steer the
tractor and operate the brakes. Do not tow the
tractor by the front axle. For tractors
equipped with a wide front axle, attach a tow
chain to the tractor front frame. NOTE Some
state and local laws prohibit or limit the use of
tow chains on highways. Before towin9 a tractor
on the highway, check state and local
regulations. CAUTION! Avoid accidents caused by
tow chain breaking or snagging. Take up tow chain
slack slowly and keep the chain tight while
towing.
