drake Ñedals These pedals are used to stop the
tractor, to hold the tractor in a stationary
position, or to assist in making sharp turns as
outlined below To stoP the tractor, depress
both pedals at tire same time. Before driving
the tractor in high gear, ale ays latch the
pedals together. TO hOld th e tritctOr i al a
St.ttiOfta ry p t)Sit1O rl, latch the pedals
together, depress them, and lock them in this
depressed position bj' using the brake pedal
lock. To assist in m.iking a sh.irp turn, operate
the pedals individually, depressing the pedal on
the side towarii which the turn is to he made.
The brale pedal latch (Jf/ 4 ltvJ i8) is used
to latch both brake pedals together, causing the
brakes to operate simultaneously.
Cautionf Always Ixtch the brak e pedals
together when driving the tractor in high gear
(fifth speed). To latch the pe4
als tpetlier, engage the latch (located in
back tf the left pedal, his.t. 18) in the slot
in back of the rig ht pedxl. U'heti the brake
ped.Els are riot latched together, the latch
should rest in the slot in back of the left brake
pedal.
The brake pedal tech (f/fo /. /a) is used to
lock the bruke ped.tls in the depressed

DESCRIPTION
Clutch Pedal This pedal, when depressed all
the way, dis- engages the engine from the
transmission.
The switch has three positions Ooff posi-
tion, Ddim lights, and Bbright lights.
Cigarette higltter Push the lighter in to tnake
electrical contact, When it paps back it is ready
for use.
Chohe Control 8utton
the choke control button makes it possible to
regulate the carburetor cheke from the driver's
seat. Pulling out on the choke control button
eloses the carburetor ctioke for starting the
engine pushing it back in opens the choke.
Engine Speed Control Never
Radiator Shutter Control Crank The control crank
opens and closes the radiator shutter,
controlling the engine temperature. Turn the
crank counterclockwise to close the shutter and
clockwise to open the shutter. Note Tractors
with gasoline engines are not regularly eqtitpped
with this feature.
Ignition Switch A key-type lock ignition switch
is located near ttie left side of the instrument
panel and reservoir shroud. Turn the key
clockwise to a horizontal posi- tionto turn on
the ignition. The key cannot be re- moved when in
this ptsition.
Various positions ef the engine speed control
lever.
4"his lever controls the speed of the engine and,
when set in a given position, will maintain a
uniform engine speed even though the engine load
may vary. The rated or maximum full load governed
speed is 1,4 5O r.p.m. maximum idle speed is
approximately 1,600 r.p.m. minimum idle speed
hznd throttle) is 4OO to 4 5G r.p.m. o tth the
engine speed control lever fully retarded, See
illest. 5. Never operate the engine at more
than the regular governed speed. Excessive speeds
are harmful.
fiautionl When the engine is not operating or the
engine has stalled and the operator leaves the
tractor, the key muse be turned to the off
position to prevent battery discharge.
Electric Starter l3ukon Pushing the button in
completes the electrical circuit between the
battery and the cranking motor solenoid arid
causes the cranking motor pinion to engage the
flywheel ring gear, thereby cranking the engine.

which provides a means of setting the exact
engine speed specified for power take-off
operations. A mark on the lower half of the dial
indicates a poe er take-off shaft speed of 537
r.p.m. at 1430 engine r.p.m. Refer to the table
ou page i9 for normal ground speeds according
to tire sizes. Refer to Power Take-Off
Specifications 4s page 23 for power take-off
speeds.
ÏecËometer
This instrument records engine hours of opera-
tion, shows normal tractor speeds in miles per
hour in all forward gears, and indicates the
engine r.p.m.
before Starting four New tractor Before starting
the engine for the first time, remove
kubriation
the spark plugs and put about one teaspoonful of
crankcase oil into each cylinder replace the
spark plugs and crank the engine to distribute
the oil over the cylinder malls. This assures
positive lutrication of the cylinders and
pistons immediately after starting and
eliminates the possibility of scoring.
Tractors shipped to destinations in the United
States of America, (enad, and Mexico have the
crankcase and air cleaner filled oith SAE- ION
oil from October 15 to April i 5, and SAE-2 O oil
from April 1 5 to October 15. If the engine is to
be operated at tem- peranires for which these
oils are recommended (see the Lubrication
Table), this oil can be used in the engine for
150 hours of operation. If temperatures are not
within the range specified, drain the oil from
the crankcase and air cleaner, and replace it
with the required amount of fresh oil having
the physical properties and proper viscosity
suitable for the prevailing temperature and
type of service. Tractors pscted for export have
all oil drained from the engine crankcase, air
cleaner and all gear case.s.
Lubricate the entire tractor, using the Lu

arid all gear cases to see that they are filled
to the correct levels with oil of the proper
viscosity for the prevail- ing temperature. See
the "Lubrication Guide and the specihcations at
lubricants or pages 31 and 3z.

Pneumatic Tires Before moving the tractor, check
the air pressure in the pneumatic tires and
inflate or deflate the front and rear tires to
the correct operating pressures, See the table or
plt,gr 76,
Fuels having a lower than 85 octane rating can be
used satisfactorily in distillate burning
engines. These engines are designed for use with
fuels having a 40 minimum octane rating. Fuels
having a less thxn 40 octane rating should be
used in kerosene burning engines. See the chart
below for fuel octane ratings re- quired to
obtain the best engine performance and maximum
engine life for your type of engine.
kear Wheels Before operating the tractor, check
the rear wheel hub clamp bolts to make Certain
that they are torqued to 39O-44O ft. lbs. Tighten
the rear w'hee1 hub clamp bolts alternate- ly and

steel wheels, or has new wheel and 1u
installations, it is advisable to check and
tighten the rear wheel bolts at intervals to be
sure that the lugs seat properly.
To obtain best results, ttse the ftie1 for which
the tractor is designed, follow the operating
instnictions given taE that fuel and observe the
following pre- cautions Use clean feel and keep
it clean. Store fuel in tanks equipped with hose
and nozzle to pre- vent contamination of the
fuel. The use of funnels, cans and drums is not
recommended because they are diBicult to keep
clean. Distillate fuels should corttorm to I
nterna- tional Harvester Company specifications
(see your International Harvester dealer). On
distillate or kerosene-burning tractors, do
riot open the shut-off valves under the
auxiliary tank and under the main fuel tank, or
even partially open them, at the same ttme, as
this will permit the distillate or kerosene to
mix with the gasoline, making the engine hard to
start. During the hrst IOO hours of operation,
mix one pint of light engine oil with every
five U.S. gallons of fuel, sxe-c. .a

starting and lighting equipment ha'e the
tattery-to-ground cable disconnected and
taped. Therefore, lrefore attempting to start
the engine, be suce the battery-to- ground cable
is connected to the ground.

does not contain alkati, which forms scale and
eventually crags the passages. Never start OE
operate the engine without water or antitreeze in
the cooling system except as instructed in Cold

Preparing Your tractor for /ac)i days Work
uel System
Never refuel the tractor while the engine is
running or extremely Not,
Fill the fuel tank (capacity 2 IQ U. S.
gallons) preferably at the end of each day's
work. This will force out any moisture-laden air
and prevent con- densation. Tractors designed for
distillate or kerosene oper- ation have an
auxiliary tank (capacity /e U.S. gallon) for
gasoline, which is used only for starting and
warmirsg up the engine. If a distillate or
kerosene engine is to be operated on Jaso1ine
only, use the large fuel task for gasoline and
either shut off the small tank or use it as an
auxiliary tank. The filler cups on both fuel
tanks have air vents. these vents should be kept
open at all times to assure proper flow of the
fctels. Ser f//ir. 9. Safety firstl Never fill
the fuel tank oiien the engine is runnicg or
when near an open flame. Do not smoke or use an
oil lantern when working around inflammable
ttiels. When refueling the tractor, keep the
hoze nozzle or the
tunnel and container in eoctaet with the metal of
the fuel tank (f//oi1. 0.4) to avoicl the
possibility of as electric spark igniting the
gas. Do not light matches near gasoline, as the
air within a radius of several feet is mixed
earth a highly explosive vapor.
Cooling System Remove the radiator filler eap
and check the water level. Fill to a level
approximately 2J inches below the top of the
filler neck.
hydra-touch System Before operating the
Hydra-Touch system for the first time, check to
see that the system is filled to the proper level
as described purge 79.
Hyraulc Remote Contro! If your tractor is
equipped with a Remote Control Adapter, observe
the following instructions
Connect the break-away couplinpq rear hal( to the
lreak-away crupling front half by giving the
rear half a light push with a small bar, Because
some force is required to latch the coupling, the
c culling design provides for use of a small bar
to obtain the necessary pressure. See Illest,
10, kVhen connecting the break-away coupling
front and rear halves, take care to keep the
coupling free
