you order parts. If this manual is kept on the
machine, also file the identification numbers in
a secure place off the machine.
READ THIS MANUAL carefully to learn how to
operate and service your machine correctly.
Failure to do so could result in personal injury
or equipment damage.
WARRANTY is provided as part of John Deere's
support program for customers who operate and
maintain their equipment as described in this

circumstances, John Deere also provides field
improvements, often without charge to the
customer, even if the product is out of warranty.
Should the equipment be abused, or modified to
change its performance beyond the original
factory specifications, the warranty will become
void and field improvements may be denied.
Setting fuel delivery above specifications or
otherwise overpowering machines will result in
such action.
RIGHT-HAND AND LEFT-HAND sides are determined by
facing in the direction of forward travel.

UNDERSTAND SIGNAL WORDS A signal wordDANGER,
WARNING, or CAUTIONis used with the safety-alert
symbol. DANGER identifies the most serious
hazards. DANGER or WARNING safety signs are
located near specific hazards. General
precautions are listed on CAUTION safety signs.
CAUTION also calls attention to safety messages
in this manual. DX,SIGNAL -19-03MAR93

FOLLOW SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Carefully read all
safety messages in this manual and on your
machine safety signs. Keep safety signs in good
condition. Replace missing or damaged safety
signs. Be sure new equipment components and
repair parts include the current safety signs.
Replacement safety signs are available from your
John Deere dealer. Learn how to operate the
machine and how to use controls properly. Do not
let anyone operate without instruction. Keep
your machine in proper working condition.
Unauthorized modifications to the machine may
impair the function and/or safety and affect

PROTECT PEOPLE AND ANIMALS Never allow anyone to
walk or work under a raised loader. Be sure that
people, livestock, or pets are not standing near
the machine while in operation. Do not use the
loader as a work platform. Do not lift or carry
anyone on loader, in bucket or on any
attachment. WX,440,SY,5

  • AVOID INJURY OR DEATH FROM ROLLOVER ACCIDENTS
  • To avoid rollovers
  • Be careful when operating on a slope.
  • Avoid holes, ditches and obstructions which may
cause tractor and loader to tip over.
  • Balance loads so weight is evenly distributed and
    load is stable.
  • Carry loads close to the ground to aid visibility
    and lower center of gravity.
  • Know capacity of loader. Do not overload.
  • Reduce speed before turning. Avoid sharp turns.

AVOID POWER LINES Serious injury or death can
result if tractor or loader contacts electrical
lines. Check lift height clearance before
raising loader. Do not leave the operator's seat
if any part of tractor or loader contacts
lines. WX,440,SY,6 -19-23AUG93

mains. Do not leave the operator's seat if any
part of tractor or loader contacts
lines. WX,440,SY,7 -19-23AUG93

CARRY MATERIALS SAFELY Be sure anyone operating
the loader is aware of safe operation and
potential hazards. Do not exceed lift capacity of
loader. Carry load low at all times. Stop loader
gradually when lowering or lifting loads. To
help prevent loss of control, do not use FLOAT
position to lower loader. Do not handle round
bales, the loader is not designed for and has no
approved attachments to handle round
bales. Avoid handling loose or shiftable
loads. Reduce tractor ground speed when
traveling over rough ground or when making
turns. Drive slowly through gates and
doors. WX,440,SY,8 -19-23AUG93

HELP PREVENT ROLL-OVERS Use recommended rear
ballast for stability. Use widest rear wheel
tread setting (A) to maximize stability.

WX,440,SY,1 -19-23AUG93
KEEP RIDERS OFF MACHINE Only allow the operator
on the tractor. Keep all riders off. Riders on
tractor or machine are subject to injury such as
being struck by foreign objects and/or being
thrown off. Riders also obstruct the operator's
view resulting in the machine being operatad in
an unsafe manner.

DRIVING ON PUBLIC ROADS Do not allow the loader
or load being carried to impair visibility. Carry
the loader at a low position. Allow for
additional length of loader on tractor while
turning. Balance load so weight is evenly
distributed and load is stable. Drive slowly if
carrying material such as gravel, rough
conditions may cause spillage. Avoid carrying
materials wider than the tractor. Use lighting
on tractor to warn other drivers of your presence.

USE SAFETY LIGHTS AND DEVICES Slow moving
tractors, self-propelled equipment and towed
implements or attachments can create a hazard
when driven on public roads. They are difficult
to see, especially at night. Avoid personal
injury or death resulting from collision with a
vehicle. Whenever driving on public roads, use
flashing warning lights and turn signal according
to local regulation. To increase visibility, use
the lights and devices provided with your
machine. For some equipment, install extra
flashing warning lights. Keep safety items in
good condition. Replace missing or damaged items.
An implement safety lighting kit is available
from your John Deere dealer.

SERVICE LOADER SAFELY Always engage parking brake
or place transmission in PARK, lower loader to
ground, shut off engine and remove key before
servicing. Do not walk or perform service under
a raised loader, bucket or attachment unless it
is securely blocked or held in position. Keep
all parts in good condition and properly
installed. Repair any damage immediately and

CHECK HOSES FOR DAMAGE Hydraulic hoses can fail
due to physical damage, kinks, age and
exposure. Check hoses regularly. Replace damaged
hoses. WX,440A,SY,11 -19-08APR94
AVOID HIGH-PRESSURE FLUIDS Escaping fluid under
pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious
injury. Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure
before disconnecting hydraulic or other lines.
Tighten all connections before applying
pressure. Search for leaks with a piece of
cardboard. Protect hands and body from high
pressure fluids. If an accident occurs, see a
doctor immediately. Any fluid injected into the
skin must be surgically removed within a few
hours or gangrene may result. Doctors unfamiliar
with this type of injury should reference a
knowledgeable medical source. Such information is
available from Deere Company Medical Department

KEEP ROPS INSTALLED PROPERLY Make certain all
parts are reinstalled correctly if the roll-over
protective structure (ROPS) is loosened or
removed for any reason. Tighten mounting bolts to
proper torque. The protection offered by ROPS
will be impaired if ROPS is subjected to
structural damage, is involved in an overturn
incident, or is in any way altered by welding,
bending, drilling, or cutting. A damaged ROPS
should be replaced, not reused. DX,ROPS3 -1
