Universal symbols are used to pictorially
identify various tractor instruments and
controls. Throughout this manual, an identifying
symbol is placed by the instructions like this
example for engine coolant temperature. The
waves signify water or coolant and
the thermometer indicates temperature. Regardless
of the language used in a nation, and
without translation, this symbol means water or
coolant temperature.
For prompt, efficient service, always specify the
tractor model and serial numbers, including
prefix and suffix letters. Write these serial
numbers in the spaces provided under Serial
Numbers".
Your new International Harvester tractor is
designed to meet today's exacting operating
requirements. The ease and comfort of operation,
the ability to match ground speeds to engine
power and work requirement, and the effortless
versatility of the hydraulic system are intended
to lighten your work and shorten your hours on
the job.
Optional equipment and accessories is available.
Disregard the instructions for equipment not on
your tractor.
METRIC (SI) MEASUREMENTS A standard of metric
measurement known as International System of
Units (SI) has been adopted for world-wide use.

IMPORTANT FUEL SYSTEM SAFETY WARNING AND ANNOUNCEM
ENT OF FREE, REPLACEMENT GASOLINE CAP CAUTION!
The following information pertains to personal
safety. Be sure to read and follow these
instructions.
PROBLEM Gasoline vapors can build up pressure
in your gasoline tank. All gasoline fuels are
more volatile today than ever before. They
vaporize and build up pressure in your gasoline
tank more easily than in the past. Winter grade
gasoline is especially subject to va- porization
and pressure build-up when used on hot Spring or
Fall days. If you have a tractor which is out of
tune or not properly maintained, it can run
hotter and increase vaporization.
PRECAUTIONS Observe the following steps for
safe operation
Always tighten gas caps securely.
Never, under any circumstances, take the gas
cap off a hot or running tractor.
Never hold over Winter gasoline for use in the
Spring. Remove any equipment unnecessary for warm
weather operations, such as comfort covers, heat
housers, or radiator covers.
  • Maintain equipment properly and pay particular
attention to electrical, exhaust, fuel, and
cooling systems. Repair or replace frayed
    electrical wires leaky exhaust manifolds,
gaskets, pipes and mufflers damaged carburetors,
sediment bowls and fuel lines. Be sure radiators
are clean inside and out. Clean off any
accumulation of trash, oil or grease.
  • Make sure that fuel cap vent holes are not
plugged, gaskets are in good condition, and that
cap tangs are firmly riveted. Repair worn, bent,
or deformed filler necks and damaged heat shields
or shield insulation. If your tractor is not
equipped with a heat shield or insulation,
install such equipment on applicable models.

DANGER Fire and personal injury.
If the fuel cap is removed when the gasoline tank
is hot and vapor pressure has, under certain
circum- stances, built up in the tank, this
sudden release of pressure could force gasoline
out of the tank. If the gas cap is not fully
secured and tightened, it could come off the
tank, and again, gasoline could es- cape. This
sudden eruption of gasoline exposes the operator
to, and may cover him with, liquid fuel and
vapors and is a clear fire hazard if a source of
ignition is present. A running engine is a source
of ignition, as are cigarettes, open flames,
sparks or a poorly maintained exhaust system. An
immediate fire could occur. The operator or
anyone in the area could be burned and suffer
serious injury or even death.
Be alert to any unusual sights and sounds dur-
ing operation. If you suspect overheating or
pressure build-up in the fuel system, do not
touch the cap. Turn off the engine and allow the
tractor to cool before you touch the cap.
6
FREE GASOLINE CAP See your dealer today.
International Harvester has developed a new
gasoline cap designed to improve vapor venting
and to inhibit the sudden eruption of liquid fuel
if the safety precautions against cap removal are
not observed.
New caps will be exchanged free of charge with
owners of certain models of International
Harvester farm tractors. To see whether your
tractor already has the new cap or to arrange to
obtain one, simply contact your local
International Harvester dealer. Also ask him
for a free International Harvester brochure New

WORK SAFELY FOLLOW THESE RULES
This symbol is used to call your attention to
instructions concerning your personal safety. Be
sure to observe and follow these instructions. A
CAREFUL OPERATOR IS THE BEST INSURANCE AGAINST AN
ACCIDENT Always keep the operator's compartment
clean. Keep dirt, trash, and grease from the
pedals, steps, mounting handles, steering wheel,
and controls. Always carry a "Charged fire
extinguisher and a first aid kit. Avoid
loose-fitting clothing, which could catch
on moving parts. Mounting assist handles and
steps are provided for your safety. Use them when
getting on or off the tractor. STARTING
Know the controls and what they do. Be in the
operator's seat and fasten the seat belt. Place
the transmission and all other controls in
neutral before starting the engine.
SERVICING AND BEFORE STARTING
Carefully supervise inexperienced operators.
Be sure power take-off lever is in the OFF" or
disengaged position before starting the engine.
Make sure that the helpers or observers stand
clear of the equipment.
When fueling a tractor, keep any type of open
flame away. Do not smoke. Stop the engine and
wait for it to cool before removing the fuel cap
or refueling.
Make sure the area is well ventilated.
Check coolant and engine oil levels, and perform
any other necessary services, before starting the
engine.
DURiNG OPERATION
Carefully supervise inexperienced operators.
Turn the radiator cap slowly counter- clockwise
to the pressure or any steam to escape then
press down on the cap
Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can have
enough force to penetrate the skin. Hydraulic
fluid may also infect a minor cut or opening in
the skin. If injured by escaping fluid, see a
doctor at once.
s
and continue to turn until the cap is free to be
removed.
Serious infection or reaction can result if
medical treatment is not given immediately. Make
sure all connections are tight and that hoses and
lines are in good condition before applying
pressure to the system. Relieve all pressure
before disconnecting the lines or performing
other work on the hydraulic system. To find a
leak under pressure use a small piece of
cardboard or wood. Never use hands.
Check brakes and clutch (Gear Drive), foot-n-inch
pedal (Hydrostatic Drive) for correct operation.
Reduce tipping hazards by spreading wheels as far
as your work program permits.
Be sure muffler and exhaust pipe are in place so
exhaust gases are discharged above the operator.
6
13
WORK SAFELY FOLLOW THESE RULES
Power take-off master shield must always be in
place on the tractor. Always keep safety shields
in place. Only the operator should ride on the
tractor. He should sit on the seat with the seat
belt fastened.
When transporting equipment on the highway, it is
recommended that a safety chain with a rating
greater than the gross load of the towed
equipment, be used.
Be sure hitches and/or drawbars are properly
stabilized before towing equipment.
Be courteous, have consideration for other
traffic using the road.
Keep others, especially children, from riding on
steps, fenders, or drawbar, and away from tractor
equipment.
BEFORE DISMOUNTING
Use the drawbar when hitching to a heavy load.
Always wait for the tractor to come to a complete
stop, disengage the PTO, lower equipment to the
ground, place the transmission and all other con-
trols in the neutral position, engage the brake
lock so the tractor will not roll, and remove the
key to avoid unauthorized operation when leaving
the tractor.
Pull only from drawbar never hitch to axle
housing.
Always keep the tractor in gear when going down
hills. A towed vehicle having a gross weight
greater than the weight of the towing tractor
must be equipped with its own brakes.
DISMOUNTING
Always avoid sudden starts, excessive speed, and
sudden stops.
Use the assist handles and steps provided, step
out of the operators area backwards.
Check overhead clearance carefully before driving
under power lines, guy wires, bridges, low
hanging tree branches, entering or leaving
building, etc.
CAUTION! Do not attempt to step out of the
operators area face forward or you may fall.
To assure the protection provided by design, the
protective structure must not be altered by
welding, cutting, drilling, or in any other
manner.
TRANSPORTING
AFTER AN UPSET
Before moving on public roads, or from field to
field, lock the brake pedals together for simul-
taneous operation.
No attempt should be made to straighten, weld, or
otherwise repair the protective frame for further
service. It must be replaced in its entirety.
Reduce speed when traveling on rough roads, sharp
turns, and down steep hills.
NOTE Do not operate the tractor or run the
engine until a thorough inspection has been mâde
to determine that all components, controls,

NEUTRAL STARTING SWITCH
Turn the ignition key clockwise to a horizontal
position. Then press the push button starting
switch and release it as soon as the engine
starts.
Your new tractor is equipped with a neutral
starting switch. I t serves to prevent moving
the tractor accidentally with the cranking motor
or starting the engine when the clutch is engaged.
NOTE Do not operate the cranking motor for more
than 30 seconds at any one time. If the engine
does not start within this time, wait one minue
and then crank again.
The switch moves to the closed contact position
when the clutch pedal (Gear Drive) or foot-n-inch
pedal (Hydrostatic Drive) is depressed all the
way.
When the engine starts, check the oil pressure
tellite. If there is no oil pressure, stop the
engine immediately and investigate the problem.
STARTING THE GASOLINE ENGINE
After the engine stans, slowly release the clutch
pedal (Gear Drive) or foot-n-inch pedal (Hydro-
static Drive).
Proceed as follows
Be sure that the fuel shut-off valve, located on
the bottom of the fuel tank is open.
I f the engine fails to start after following the
above procedure, see your International Harvester
dealer.
Put the transmission range lever (Gear Drive) or
range selector control and speed ratio control
(Hydrostatic Drive) into the "N (neutral)
position.
STOPPING THE GASOLINE ENGINE
To stop the engine, retard the engine speed by
moving the control lever all the way up to the low

counterclockwise to the "OFF position.
Allow the engine to cool gradually after working
the tractor. By idling the engine three to five
minutes before shutting it down, the engine oil
and the cooling system will carry heat away from
the engine.
Advance the engine speed control lever one-half.
Depress the clutch pedal (Gear Drive) or
foot-n-inch pedal (Hydrostatic Drive) which
closes the neutral starting switch.
10
17
OPERATING THE TRACTOR
To prevent excessive loss of coolant from the
cooling system due to expansion after heavy-load
operation at high ambient termperatures, the
engine should be run at high idle until the
temperature gauge reaches its lower normal
position before stopping.
When the engine starts, check the oil pressure
tellite. If there is no oil pressure, stop the
engine immediately and investigate the problem.
After the engine starts, slowly release the
clutch pedal (Gear Drive) or foot-n-inch pedal
(Hydro- static Drive).
STARTING THE DIESEL ENGINE
I f the engine fails to start after following the
above procedure, see your International Harvester
dealer.
When Temperatures Are Above Freezing
Proceed as follows Be sure that the fuel
shut-off valve, located on the bottom of the fuel
tank is open. Put the transmission range lever
(Gear Drive) or range selector control and speed
ratio control (Hydrostatic Drive) into the
N (neutral) position. Place the engine speed
control lever at intermediate idle position for
starting. During cold weather or when required,
improved starting can be obtained by placing the
engine speed control lever in high idle
position. When the engine speed control lever is
set at the detent position, the engine speed is
at low idle. When the lever is at the extreme
forward position, the engine speed is at high
idle.
When Temperatures Are Below Freezing
At temperatures below freezing, it may be
necessary to use ether as a starting aid. Remove
the protective plug (if so equipped) or the empty
container from the bottom of the ether injection
assembly and install an approved aerosol can of
ether in place.
Follow the instructions uner "When Temperatures
Are Above Freezing through the step where the
key switch is turned on, then continue as follows.
Press the push button starting switch, and with
the engine cranking, press the ether start push
button until the engine starts.
If the engine is not firing on all cylinders,
apply ether intermittently until the engine is
running smoothly.
If the engine does not begin firing within 15
seconds, stop cranking and make certain that
ether is available under pressure. To do so,
remove the ether aerosol can and check if a good
spray is obtained.
NOTE If the high idle position is used for
starting, as soon as the engine starts, reset the
engine speed control lever to obtain
approximately 1,000 to 1,500 r.p.m.
CAUTION! When checking spray from ether aerosol
can be careful to aim spray away from face and
body. If a good visible spray cannot be obtained,
replace with new aerosol can and repeat starting
attempt. If the aerosol can was providing a good
spray, reinstall and test the ether connections
for problems.
Depress the clutch pedal (Gear Drive) or
foot-n-inch pedal (Hydrostatic Drive) which closes
the neutral starting switch. Turn the key switch
clockwise to a horizontal position. Then press
the push button starting switch and release it as
soon as the engine starts. NOTE Do not operate
the cranking motor for more than 30 seconds at
any one time. If the engine does not start within
this time, wait one minute and then crank again.

OPERATING THE TRACTOR
CAUTION! Observe the precautions printed on the
container when using or storing this fluid and
when discarding the empty containers. Ether must
be in twelve ounce container meeting ICC 2Q
specifications. NOTE Improper starting fluids
can cause valve seizure and severe damage to the
engine. Consult your authorized International
Harvester dealer for the recommended starting
fluid to be used.
To prevent excessive loss of coolant from the
cooling system due to expansion after heavy-load
operation at high ambient temperatures, the
engine should be run at high idle until the
temperaure guage reaches its lower normal
position before stopping.
WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING
Check all the gauges and tellites.
Engine Coolant Heater
Engine Oil Pressure Tellite (Red) The tellite
will come on when low pressure occurs in the
engine. Stop the engine and check the oil level
in the engine crankcase. Add oil if necessary to
bring if to the proper level. Refer to
"Lubrication Guide". If the tellite still comes
on, see your International Harvester
dealer. Transmission Oil Temperature Tellite
(Red) (Hydrostatic Drive) The tellite will come
on when excessive oil temperature occurs in the
trans- mission.
An engine coolant heater is used to warm the
coolant to aid in starting the engine in cold
weather conditions. It is located on the left
side of the engine and requires a 3 wire
extension cord and a 120 volt AC grounded outlet
for safe operation. After engine starts, be sure
to disconnect extension cord before moving
tractor. Transmission Oil Heater (Hydrostatic
Drive)
The 500 watt transmission oil heater for
hydrostatic drive tractors is used to warm the
oil to
aid in starting the engine in extreme cold
weather conditions. It is located on the drive
housing bottom cover and requires a 3-wire
extension cord and a 120 volt AC grounded outlet
for safe operation. At sub-zero termperatures,
the heater should be operated a minimum of four
hours or overnight, if so desired.
Temperature Gauge
This instrument shows the temperature of the
coolant circulating through the engine. The
temperature gauge should be used to maintain
proper operating temperatures of the vehicle. The
engine and cooling system are designed to operate
with the pointer in the middle of the gauge. If
the pointer fails to reach the middle of the
gauge during normal operations, check the
thermostat. If the pointer moves toward the "H,
one or more of the following items could be the
cause low coolant level, loose belts, excessive
anitfreeze concentration, excessive fuel rate,
plugged radiator fins or grill screen, cooling
system deposits, and engine injection pump
mistimed. Shifting to a lower gear to reduce
engine load will lower coolant temperature.
After the engine starts be sure to disconnect
extension cord before moving the tractor.
STOPPING THE DIESEL ENGINE
To stop the engine, retard the engine speed by
pushing the control lever past the low idle
detent position until the engine shuts off. Turn
the key switch counterclockwise to the Off
position.
Allow the engine to cool gradually after working
the tractor. By idling the engine three to five
minutes before shutting it down, the engine oil
and the cooling system will carry heat away from
the engine.
