WORK SAFELY - FOLLOW THESE RULES
This symbol is used to call your attention to
instructions concerning your personal safety. Be
sure to observe and follow these instructions.
A CAREFUL OPERATOR IS THE BEST INSURANCE AGAINST
AN ACCIDENT
BEFORE START'ING
Clean dirt, trash, and grease from operator's
pIatforii, pedals, steps and steering wheel.
Know the controls and what they do.
Always carry a "Charged fire extinguisher and a
first aid kit.
When fueling an engine, keep any type open flame
away. Do Not Smoke! Wait for the engine to cool
before refueling it.
Avoid loose-fitting clothing, which could catch
on moving parts.
Check brakes and clutch for correct adjustments.
Mounting assist handles and steps are provided
for your safety. Use them when getting on or off
the tractor.
Reduce tipping hazards by spreading wheels as far
as your work program permits.
Check coolant and engine oil levels, and perform
any other necessary services, before starting the
engine.
Put all controls in neutral before starting
the engine.
12
WORK SAFELY - FOLLOW THESE RULES
Be sure power take-off lever is in the OFF or
disengaged position before starting engine.
Disengage PTO and shut off the engine before
adjusting or unclogging power driven machinery.
Before starting engine make sure helpers or
observers stand clear of equipment.
Only the operator should ride on the tractor. He
should sit on the seat or stand on the platform.
If the tractor has roll over protective frame or
cab, sit on seat with safety belt fastened.
Operate the engine only in well ventilated areas.
Release park brake completely prior to moving
tractor. Be sure muffler and exhaust pipe
extensions are in place so exhaust gases are
discharged above operator.
Keep others, especially children, from riding on
steps, fenders, or drawbar, and away from tractor
and equipment.
Always keep the tractor in gear when going down
steep hills. A towed vehicle having a gross
weight 9reater than the weight of the towing
tractor must be equipped with its own brakes.
Check overhead clearance carefully before driving
under power lines, guy wires, bridges, low
hanging tree branches, entering or leaving
buildings, etc.
Always avoid sudden starts, excessive speed, and
sudden stops.
DURING OPERATION
Carefully supervise inexperienced operators.
Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure can have
enough force to penetrate the skin. Hydraulic
fluid may also infect a minor cut or opening in
the skin. If injured by escajDing fluid, see a
doctor at once. Serious infection or reaction can
resuIt if medical treatment is not given
immediately. Make sure all connections are tight
and that hoses and lines are in good condition
before applying pressure to the system. Relieve
all pressure before disconnecting the lines or
performing other work on the hy- draulic system.
To find a leak under pressure use a small piece
of cardboard or wood. Never use hands.
Stop the engine before leaving the tractor and
engage the park brake. After an upset, no attempt
should be made to straighten, weld, or otherwise
repair the protective frame or protective cab for
further service. It must be replaced in its
entirety.
To assure the protection provided by design, the
protective structure must not be altered by
welding, cutting, drilling, or in any other
manner.
Power take-off master shield must always be in
place on the tractor.
NOTE Do not operate the tractor or run the
engine until a thorough inspection has been made
to determine that all components, controls, sys-
tem, etc. are operating correctly. The tractor
must be inspected for other damage, preferably,
by your International Harvester dealer, and all
necessary corrections made.
Use the drawbar in lowest position when hitching
to a heavy load, such as manure spreaders, loaded
two-wheels trailers, and heavy wagons.
TRACTORS WITH CABS
axle
only from drawbar never hitch to
Pull
housing.
Be sure cab doors are securely latched when
operating the tractor.
Shift transmission to neutral and set park brake
before dismounting from tractor for any reason.
Always use the seat belts, if they are furnished
with the unit. However, do not install seat belts
if the tractor has no protective frame.
Always keep safety shields in place.
13
WORK SAFELY - FOLLOW THESE RULES
When moving on public roads, or from field to
field, lock brake pedals together for
simultaneous operation when making a stop.
Adjust rear view mirrors for maximum vision.
Lock the cab doors, if locks are furnished, when
leaving the tractor.
Be courteous, have consideration for other
traffic using the road.
TRANSPORTING
Reduce speed when traveling on rough roads.
AFTER OPERATING wait for tractor to STOP before
dismounting.
Avoid heavily-traveled roads when moving equip-
ment, if at all possible.
Lower equipment to ground before leaving tractor.
Use warning devices (i.e. flags, S.M.V. emblem,
lights, etc.) which are approved for use by your
local government agencies, when moving equip-
ment on public roads. Keep these devices clean
and in good working condition.
Shut off engine and remove ignition key. Lock the
park brake so tractor will not roll.
To remove radiator cap when engine is HOT, turn
cap to the pressure relief point - let pressure
and steam escape - then remove it.
When transporting equipment on the highway, it is
recommended that a safety chain with a 10,500
pound (4763 Kg) gross load capacity be used.
Be sure hitches and/or drawbars are properly
stabilized before towing equipment.

down of air in extreme hot weather conditions,
pull the lever rearward to recirculate the inside
air.
The cab has a fresh air filter and pressurizer
system which when in operation provides filtered
fresh air into the cab. NOTE The cab electrical
system except the dome light is not on until the
key switch is on.
For one hundred per cent outside air, place the
lever at the forward position.
Air Conditioner Switch and Control
Pressurizer fan and speed switch
The control must be in "ON" position and the
temperature may be controlled as desired by the
position of the control. The pressurizer fan
switch must be turned on for the air conditioner
system to operate. To help control humidity, the
heater may be turned on while operating the air
conditioner.
The pressurizer fan is controlled by a three
speed switch and air is directed into the cab by
adjustable louvers. For maximum pressurization
the switch should be in the "HI" (high) position.
Air Recirculation Lever
To obtain quick warm-up of air in the cab in
16
INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS
To obtain maximum cooling, move the air recircu-
lation lever rearward.
Radio
The radio tuning knob is at the right side of the
radio dial. A combination on-off and volume
control knob is at the left of the dial. A
ring-type tone control is located behind the
volume control knob. A ring-type control is
located behind the tuning knob to balance the
left and right speakers. A headphone jack is
available from your dealer. To adjust the push
buttons, pull the selector button straight out
until it stops. Tune in the desired station. Then
push the selector button straight in until it
stops. Then release it.
Operate the air conditioner a few minutes each
week during the off season to lubricate the
seals. If evaporator icing is suspected, it may
become necessary to turn the control to a warmer
setting.
Heater Temperature Control
The heat control must be turned on and the degree
of heat may be varied by the position of the
control.
The pressurizer fan switch and control must be
turned on to deliver the heated air.
For best FM reception, tune in a weak station at
lower end of the band. Pull off both right knobs
and then insert a screwdriver through the access
hole and adjust trimmer screw for maximum volume.
Reattach knobs.
To obtain maximum heating, move the air recircu-
lation lever rearward.
Turn signals The turn signal lever (located to
the left of the steering wheel) is used by moving
it down for left turn and up for right turn as
shown by flashing lights on side towards turn,
with steady light shown on opposite side. NOTE
In order to actuate turn signals tractor
taillight must be on.

Tape Player
To operate the tape player, insert an eight track
tape cartridge, label side up and open end first,
into the tape slot. Push the cartridge into the
tape slot until it is firmly seated. This
automatically turns the tape player on. If the
radio was turned on, a relay will disconnect the
radio to prevent radio operation while the tape
is playing.

INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS
The tape player will pI.ay all four channels
auto- matically and in order. An indicator light
at the left of the tape slot indicates which
channel is playing. If a different channel is
desired, push the channel selector button at the
right of the tape slot. The unit will step to the
next channel each time the button is pushed.
The tape player volume, balance and tone controls
are at the bottom front edge of the tape player.
Moving the stereo balance control to the left
decreases the volume of the left hand speaker and
increases the volume of the right hand speaker,
while moving the control to the right does just
the opposite. Adjust the stereo balance control
until you hear equal volume from both speakers.
BEFORE OPERATING YOUR NEW TRACTOR
TRACTOR BREAK-IN PROCEDURE Never operate an
engine immediately under full load. Break it in
carefully as shown in the table. Do not overload
the engine at any time. Allow engine to warm up
before operating at full load. If engine coolant
temperature rises above middle mark or RUN range
on temperature gauge, and coolant level in
radiator is correct, shift to lower gear. The
engine is filled with shipaway oil. During the
first 100 hours of operation do not overload or
idle engine for prolonged periods. Hydraulic
filter elements must be changed as specified in
Lubrica- tion Guide.
GOVERNOR
The governor is set at the factory and should
require no adjustment. Consult your International
Harvester dealer if the governor does not
function properly.
Any attempt to increase the engine horsepower by
increasing engine r.p.m. above its rated maximum,
or by other means, not only affecu traveling
speeds but affects the life of matching parts and
voids the company responsibility as outlined in
the warranty.
AIR CLEANING SYSTEM
Period Engine Speed Control Lever Position Load
1st Hour Fully advanced Maintain engine speed 100 RPM above full load governed speed.
2nd Through Sth Hours Fully advanced Full load governed speed with occa- sional short periods of lighter load.
Refer to Air-Cleaning System. ENGINE COOLING
SYSTEM Never start to operate the engine without
first checking to see if the radiator is filled
to the proper level, for the prevailing
temperature, with soft or rain water or
antifreeze. Refer to Cooling System. Tractors
shipped in the United States and Canada have the
cooling system filled with anti- freeze. FUEL
SYSTEM
LUBRICATION
Refer to Gasoline or Diesel Engine and Fuel
System.
Lubricate the entire tractor, using the
Lubrication Guide and the Lubrication Table.
Check the oil levels. Refer to Lubrication.
PRIMING THE TURBOCHARGER
Before starting a new diesel turbocharged engine
or when the engine has been idle for a month or
more, the turbocharger must be primed. Refer to
Diesel Engine and Fuel System.
TIRES
Check the air pressures. See the tables for front
and rear tire inflation pressures.
19
DRIVING THE TRACTOR
PREPARING THE TRACTOR FOR EACH DAY'S WORK Check
the level of the coolant in the radiator. Refer
to "Cooling System". Check the oil level in the
engine crankcase. Also lubricate the chassis
points recommended for daily service. Refer to
"Lubrication Guide" and "Lubri- cation
Table". lnspect the tires for general condition.
FUEL GAUGE When the key switch is turned on, the
fuel gauge indicates the level of the fuel in the
fuel tank. NOTE An in-line fuse holder with
AGC-1 amp. fuse located at fuel gauge receiving
unit is provided to prevent damage to fuel gauge
sending unit if any incorrect connection is made
on fuel gauge. It is important to use the same
capacity fuse for replacement. If fuel gauge
fails to function check the fuse. NOTE The key
must be left in the "ON" position while the
engine is running so the fuel gauge will
function. FILLING THE FUEL TANK CAUTION! Never
remove the fuel tank cap or fill the fuel tank
when the engine is running, is hot, or when near
an open flame. Do not smoke when working
around inflammable fuel as the air around the
tractor is mixed with highly explosive vapor.
When pouring fuel, keep the container or hose
nozzle in contact with the metal of the fuel tank
to avoid the possibility of an electric spark
igniting the fuel. Fill the fuel tank,
preferably at the end of each day's work. This
will force out any moisture-laden air and prevent
condensation. NOTE Do not fill the tank to its
full capacity as space is required for vapor
expansion in the event of a temperature change. A
tank filled to capacity may overflow if exposed
to a rise in temperature or direct sunlight.
The filler cap on the fuel tank has an air vent.
This vent should be kept open at all times to
assure proper flow of the fuel. Before starting
the diesel engine tractor for each day's work,
open the fuel tank water drain cock on the right
side of the tractor to drain off water and
sediment. Close the drain as soon as clean fuel
appears. ADJUSTING THE SEAT The seat can be
adjusted forward or rearward to one of five
positions by means of the adjusting handle at the
left side of the seat. The back cushion of the
seat can be adjusted to three different positions
to the front or rear and three different heights
by means of the mounting holes in the back
cushion support. The back rest extension, is also
adjustable to three different heights.
