PANTHER 1OOO SERIES OPERATORS MANUAL
Caterpillar 3406 Engines ts/ a001 Up) General
Information
Effective with the above tractor serial number,
all Panther 1000 CP model tractors are equipped
with the new production Caterpillar 3406B
genera- tion engines. The specifications and
operational information for the new B
generation engine remain the same as for the
early production engine described within this
manual. The major difference between the new B"
generation 3406 engine and the early engine is a
new design scroll fuel system. Because of this
other engine componants are also located
differently on this new generation engine from
those shown pictorially within this manual. Also
this new generation engine does not require a fan
idler pulley. Specifications and capacities are
the same as listed on page 12 within this manual.

Engine Coolant Couplets (S/N 2583
Up) Effective with the above tractor serial
number engine coolant transfer couplers are no
longer supplied as standard equipment on Panther
1000 Series tractors. All reference to engine
coolant transfer couplers contained within this
manual are to be disregarded. Park Brake
Operation s/ a001 Up)
On early production tractors, when the park brake
was applied and the key switch was in the run
position the vehicle warning system (VWS) would
energize an audio alarm. Effective with the above
serial number the park brake audio alarm
will energize only when the transmission mode
control lever is moved out of the neutral
position. This will allow the operator to set the
park brake without energ izing the audio alarm if
operating stationary PTO equipment.

SBRIES IV CM-KM, CS-KS, P1OOO
Operation Maintenance Manuals
New K598 6O '7O Axle All Series IV CM-KM, CS-KS
and Panther 1000 Series tractors from 225 to 360
horsepower are now equipped with the new K598
60/70 double reduction outboard planetary axle
as standard equipment. The K598 60/70 axle system
began to be installed as a running change in
production during late April, 1984 effective with
the following serial numbers
Total Axle Capacity 22.4 US qts (18.IL) Oil
Type Steiger HD API-GL-5 80W-90 gear oil, or
other oils that meet the API service classificatio
n, GL-5 and/or MIL-L-2105B spec ifications
NOTE In general 80W-90 is the recommended oil,
however, SAE 90 is acceptable as an alternative.
Axle assemblies are flow-through design oil
is allowed to flow between compartments.
Always park the tractor on a level surface when
checking fluid levels.
CM-KM Models - 03961 up CS-KS models - 03054
UP CP KP 1325 1360 Models - N/A
IMPORTANT Change axle lube oil after the
first 100 hours of operation. Change oil after
operation while the oil is still warm.
The power flow characteristics differ somewhat
from the former K598 20/30 axle and are as
follows
  1. The outer planetary (3 gears) is the intermediate
drive and receives the power flow from the axle
    shaft sun gear.
  2. The power flow is then transferred to the inner
planetary (5 gears) which is the final drive that
transmits the torque directly to the wheel hub.
  3. The outboard design teams with the differential
carrier to provide a 25.309 total overall axle
    ratio.

Compared to the previous 598 20/30 axle, the
intermediate drive planetary gears in the 598
60/70 axle have been increased in diameter by
60. The final drive planetary (5 gears) remain
the same size. In addition, both plantary
ring gears are deep hardened to provide
additional strength and durabil- ity and the
outer planetary gear needle bearings are much
larger. The hub sealing arrangement is the
2-piece Garlock type seal.

NormalTractorStartupSECCComputer Characteristics
(S 'N 3001 Up) Upon normal tractor startup
(transmission mode lever in neutral and engine
started) the dashboard will immediately display
the current software revision level of the
on-board computer in the MPH display. This
revision level will be in the form of a C
followed by a decimal number (i.e. C1.9). This
data will be displayed for five (5) seconds. The
dash will then display 8s in all locations
(except two bars in the extreme left digit of the
MPH display and one bar on the 2nd digit of the
gear display). After the computer has gone
through this check routine, and no error codes
are discovered, the dashboard will then read
current rpm, mph and 0 gear.
The SECC Vehicle Warning System
(VwS) General Information
The Vehicle Warning System is a means of alerting
the operator to conditions which may warrant his
attention.
There are two sources of signals which are moni-
tored by the VWS those originating from the dash
ILM (Indicator Light Module) and those
originating from sources external to the ILM.
Signals origina- ting from the ILM are broken
down into two cate- gories, critical and
non-critical alarms.
All critical alarm signal tones will be a
pulsating tone from a low pulse rate to a high
pulse rate to a steady tone and can only be
stopped by correcting the problem.
If a fault should be discovered during the
computer check routine an error code will be
displayed in the mph display. This display will
be in the form of an E followed by a decimal
number (i.e.E41.9) and the electronic failure
light will illuminate generating an audio alarm.
All non-critical signal tone alarms will be for a
five second duration followed by a 12 minute
delay and continue until the problem is corrected.
IMPORTANT I f an error code should be displayed,
the opera for should aI\vays rese/ the system
for a follow up check and verification routine.
The system may be reset by turning f/?e key
switch to Me o ff position and turning the
switch back on to the run position.
Any error code displayed in the mph LCD during
this 5 second duration will then disappear and
reappear at 12 minute intervals for 5 seconds
until the problem is corrected. This allows the
operator to have mph displayed during
non-critical alarm status. The electronic failure
lig ht will remain on until the problem is
corrected.
IMPORTANT NOTE The generation of any alarm by
the VWS circuit will NOT automatically shut- down
the engine.
17
Operator Inf'ormation Por Error Code Display Some
system malfunctions may disable the tractor and
will require dealer assistance to correct, other
malfunctions may disable some functional systems
such as, 3-Pt Hitch Control, HVAC (Heating,
Ventila- tion Air Conditioning or the Vehicle
Warning System (VWS) but will not disable the
tractor. If/or when an error code should be
displayed refer to the following guide to
determine the specific error code meaning and
possible check or field repair. In addition
to error codes there may also be certain
indicator lights displayed simultaneously that
will indicate a system malfunction.
IMPORTANT If an error code or certain dash
indicator lights are displayed generating an
audio alarm, which may disable the computer and
transmis- sion circuitry, the operator may still
be able to move the tractor in emergency
situations by shifting the mode control lever
to the forward or reverse" range and
depressing the button in the center of the Pulsar
Control Lever and moving the lever to the
override position.
