WORK SAFELY FOLLOW THESE RULES
This symbol is used to call your attention to
instructions concerning your personal safety.
Be sure to observe and follow these instructions.
A CAREFUL OPERATOR IS THE BEST INSURANCE AGAINST
AN ACCIDENT
BEFORE STARTING Know the controls and what they
do. When fueling an engine, keep any type open
flame away. Do Not Smoke! Wait for the engine to
cool before refueling it. Check brakes and clutch
for correct adjustments. Reduce tipping hazards
by spreading wheels as far as your work program
permits. Check coolant and engine oil levels, and
perform any other necessary services, before
starting the engine. Clean dirt, trash, and
grease from operator's platform, pedals, steps
and steering wheel. Always carry a Charged
fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
Mounting assist handles and steps are provided
for your safety. Use them when getting on or off
the tractor. Put all controls in neutral before
starting the engine. Be suFe power take-off lever
is in the OFF or disengaged position before
starting engine. Before starting engine make sure
helpers or observers stand clear of
equipment. Operate the engine only in well
ventilated areas. Release park brake completely
prior to moving tractor. Be sure muffler and
exhaust pipe extensions are in place so exhaust
gases are discharged above operator. Check
overhead clearance carefully before driving under
power lines, guy wires, bridges, low hanging tree
branches, entering or leaving buildings, etc.
Avoid loose-fitting clothing, which could catch
on moving parts.

WORK SAFELY FO LLOW THESE RULES
DURING OPERATION Hydraulic fluid escaping under
pressure can have enough force to penetrate the
skin. Hydraulic fluid may also infect a minor cut
or opening in the skin. If injured by escaping
fluid, see a doctor at once. Serious infection or
reaction can result if medical treatment is not
given immediately. Make sure all connections are
tight and that hoses and lines are in good
condition before applying pressure to the system.
Relieve all pressure before disconnecting the
lines or performing other work on the hydraulic
system. To find a leak under pressure use a small
piece of cardboard or wood. Never use
hands. Power take-off master shield must always
be in place on the tractor. Use the drawbar in
lowest position when hitching to a heavy load,
such as manure spreaders, loaded two-wheel
trailers, and heavy wagons. Pull only from
drawbar never hitch to axle housing. Shift
transmission to neutral and set park brake before
dismounting from tractor for any reason. Always
keep safety shields in place. Disengage PTO and
shut off the engine before adjusting or
unclogging power driven machinery. Only the
operator should ride on the tractor. He should
sit on seat or stand on the platform. Keep
others, escpecially children, from riding on
steps, fenders, or drawbar, and away from tractor
and equipment. Reduce speed before making a
turn. Only the operator should ride on the
tractor. He should sit on the seat or stand on
the platform. If the tractor has roll over
protective frame or cab, sit on seat with safety
belt fastened. Always keep the tractor in gear
when going down steep hills. A towed vehicle
having a gross weight greater than the weight of
the towing tractor must be equipped with its own
brakes. Always avoid sudden starts, excessive
speed, and sudden stops. Carefully supervise
inexperienced operators. Stop the engine before
leaving the tractor and engage the park
brake. After an upset, no attempt should be made
to straighten, weld, or otherwise repair the
protective frame or protective cab for further
service. It must be replaced in its entirety. To
assure the protection provided by design, the
protective structure must not be altered by
welding, cutting, drilling, or in any other
manner. NOTE Do not operate the tractor or run
the engine until a thorough inspection has been
made to determine that all components, controls,
system, etc., are operating correctly. The
tractor must be inspected for other damage,
preferably, by your International Harvester
dealer, and all neces- sary corrections made.
TRACTORS WITH CABS Be sure cab doors are securely
latched when operating the tractor. Always use
the seat belts, if they are furnished with the
unit. F\owever, do not install seat belts if the
tractor has no protective frame. Adjust rear view
mirrors for maximum vision. Lock the cab doors,
if locks are furnished, when leaving the tractor.
TRANSPORTING Reduce speed when traveling on rough
roads. Avoid heavily-traveled roads when moving
equip- ment, if at all possible. Use warning
devises (i.e. flags, S.M.V. emblem, lights, etc.)
which are approved for use by your local
government agencies, when moving equip- ment on
public roads. Keep these devices clean and in
good working condition. When transporting
equipment on the highway, it is recommended that
a safety chain with a 10,500 pound (4,767.00 Kg)
gross load capacity be used. Be sure hitches
and/or drawbars are properly stabilized before
towing equipment. When moving on public roads, or
from field to field, lock brake pedals together
for simultaneous operation when making a stop. Be
courteous, have consideration for other traffic
using the road.
AFTE!3 OPERATING Wait for tractor to "STOP"
before dismounting. Lower equipment to ground
before leaving tractor. Shut off engine and
remove ignition key. Lock the park brake so
tractor will not roll. To remove the radiator cap
when the engine is "HOT", turn the cap to the
pressure release point let pressure and steam
escape then remove it.

The cab has a fresh air filter and pressurizer
system which when in operation provides filtered
fresh air into the cab.
The pressurizer fan is controlled by a three
speed switch and air is directed into the cab by
two adjustable louvres. For maximum
pressurization the switch should be in the H
(high) position and fresh air lever in open
position.
NOTE The cab electrical system is not on until
the key switch is on.

steering wheel) is used by moving it down for
left turn and up for right turn as shown by
flashing lights on side towards turn, with steady
light shown on opposite side.
The switch must be in one of three speeds to
deliver hot air.
Air recirculation controls
To obtain quick warm up of air in the cab, in
extreme cold weather conditions, fresh air lever
must be in closed position to recirculate inside
air. For one hundred percent filtered fresh air
place the lever at the open position.
NOTE In order to actuate turn signals tractor
taillight must be on. Turn signal switch for
standard dual flashing warning lights operation
should be in the center position. Windshield

The filter must be cleaned frequently, as
required by operating conditions, in order to
insure full flow of fresh air. Rotate the filter
retainer latch to release the filter.
1 - Location of re-circulation filter
Remove the cover and then the filter from the
front upper end, inside the cab.
Clean the filter frequently as required by
operating conditions. Use mild soap and water.
Rinse with clear water and gently squeeze out the
excess.
Remove filter unit by pulling tab. After removing
the filter it may be cleaned by tapping it gently
with air inlet side facing down- ward being
careful not to damage filter housing or sealing
surfaces. Compressed air may be used but extreme
care must be taken, to prevent damage to the
paper filter. Blow air through the filter from
the back side, (40 p.s.i. (275.60 KPa) maximum
air pressure is recom- mended). Filter may also
be washed periodically in a suitable filter
cleaner or mild non-sudsing detergent. Re- verse
flush in clear water.
AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSER
This unit located at the top rear of the cab, is
equipped with a vertical finned core assembly
which is self-cleaning in operation.
In operation turn air conditioner off momentarily
and accumulated chaff, etc. on lower face of
condenser fins will be jarred loose by vibration
of the tractor. When air conditioner is again
turned on it will operate at increased cooling
efficiency.
Periodically as required, the condenser fins may
be blown clean with air or flushed with water to
fully renew cooling efficiency.
NOTE Filter must be thoroughly dry before
reinstalling in the cab. Do not force dry with
heat

SIGHT GLASS
1 - Sight glas The sight glass is used to
determine if sufficient refrigerant charge is in
the air conditioning unit.
  • - Compressor mounting bracket bolts
  • - Adjusting bolt and lock nut
  • - Compressor oil filler plug
  • - Coolant shut-off (left rear shown - right
  • front located on engine thermostat housing)

To check the sight glass remove both plugs at the
rear of the condenser box.
View sight glass through one hole while
illuminat- ing the sight glass through the other
hole.
Adjusting the compressor belt.
Be sure sight glass is clean. If the sight glass
is cloudy, with many bubbles, in continuous
running cycle, the unit is low on refrigerant
charge and must be serviced to full charge
condition for efficient cooling. See your
"International Harvester" dealer.
COMPRESSOR PULLEY AND CLUTCH
The compressor clutch should be periodically
cleaned thoroughly.
Energize the clutch. Remove bolt "A".
ADJUSTING THE COMPRESSOR BELT TENSION The
compressor drive belt is adjusted for tension by
moving the compressor on its mounting bracket.

and slowly tighten to remove pulley and clutch
from the shaft. Remove bolt from clutch.
De-energize the clutch.
Loosen the three mounting bracket bolts and the
adjusting bolt lock nut. Tighten the belt by
turning the adjusting bolt "in" loosen the belt
by turning the adjusting bolts "out". The tension
is correct when the belt can be deflected with a
25 pound (11.35 Kg) load 15/32-inch (11.89 mm)
midway between the fan and compressor
pulleys. When using a belt tension dial gauge,
the recom- mended range is 100 to 120 pounds
(45.40 to 54.48 Kg) (direct reading on the dial).
Thoroughly clean inside recessed area of pulley
and clutch with compressed air.
Clean the face, outside dimension and inside
dimension of the coil.

ELECTRICAL
COMPRESSOR OIL LEVEL
For satisfactory operation, the oil level in the
compressor must be checked periodically. See your
International Harvester dealer. NOTE Do not add
any oil indiscriminately. Refrigerant pressure is
lost if oil service port is opened.
COOLANT SHUT-OFF The coolant shut-offs for the
heater are located at both sides of the engine.
They are provided for easy shut-off in the
summer, or servicing for any reason, so it will
not be necessary to drain the system.
LUBRICATION
1 - Location of relay station consist- ing of
relay, circuit breakers, flasher unit and
location of tractor to cab cable harness con-
nector. 2 - Location of transmission oil
level gauge. Electrical units for cab.
The transmission oil level gauge on tractors
equipped with a cab is located in the middle of
the cab floor. For servicing lift up the cut out
part of the floor mats as shown. Refer to Gear
Lubricant.
All cab power except the dome light is controlled
by the key switch. The cab power is protected by
30 ampere circuit breakers, mounted on a
bracket. The battery ground strap should be
disconnected for any servicing of the electrical
system.
MISCELLANEOUS
Tractor to cab wiring connector is at the right
side under the panel, to cab cable harness at
right front corner of cab.
The vinyl covering on the foam panels may be
cleaned by vacuuming or wiping clean with soap
and water using a damp cloth. Replace windshield
wiper blades when they are wom and do not wipe
adequately. For safe operation keep the cab
windows clean.
Flasher Unit
If the standard dual flashing lights do not flash
as required when turn signal switch is in center
position, the flasher unit may need replacement.

BEFORE OPERATING Y0UR NEW TRACTOR
TRACTOR BREAK-IN PROCEDURE AIR CLEANING SYSTEM
Never operate an engine immediately under full
load. Break it in carefully as shown in the
table. Do not overload the engine at any time.
Refer to "Air Cleaning System".
Allow engine to warm up before operating at full
load. If engine coolant temperature rises above
middle mark or RUN range on temperature gau ge,
shift to lower gear.
ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM
Never start or operate the engine without first
checking to see if the radiator is filled to the
proper level, for the prevailing temperature,
with soft or rain water or antifreeze. Refer to
"Cooling System". Tractors shipped in the United
States and Canada have the cooling system filled
with anti- freeze.
Period Engine Speed Control Lever Position Load
1st Hour Fully advanced Maintain engine speed 100 RPM above full load governed speed.
2nd Through Sth Hours Fully advanced Full load gov- erned speed with occassional short periods of lighter load.
PRIMING THE TURBOCHARGER Before starting a new
engine or when the engine has been idle for a
month or more, the turbo- charger must be primed.
Refer to Engine and Fuel System.
During first 100 hours of operation with shipaway
oil, avoid prolonged periods of engine idling,
but do not overload. Hydraulic filter elements
must be changed as specified in "Lubrication
Guide".
FUEL SYSTEM Refer to Engine and Fuel System.
Any attempt to increase the engine horsepower by
increasing engine r.p.m. above its rated maximum,
or by other means, not only affects traveling
speeds but affects the life of matching parts and
voids the company responsibility as outlined in
the warranty.
PREPARING THE TRACTOR FOR EACH DAY'S WORK Check
the level of the coolant in the radiator. See
"Cooling System".
LUBRICATION
Lubricate the entire tractor, using the
"Lubrication Guide" and the "Lubrication Table"
for reference. Check the oil levels. Refer to
"Lubrication".
Check the oil level in the engine crankcase. Also
lubricate the chassis points recommended for
daily service. Refer to "Lubrication Guide" and
the "Lubrication Table".
TIRES Check the air pressures. See the tables for
front and rear tire inflation pressures.
lnspect the tires for general condition. See
Steer- ing, Wheels and Tires".

DRIVING THE TRACTOR one of five positions Dy
means of the
FUEL GAUGE
foot
adjustment lever at the right side of the
seat. When the key switch is turned on, the fuel
gauge indicates the level of the fuel in the fuel
tank. NOTE An in-line fuse holder with AGC-1
amp. fuse located at fuel gauge receiving unit is
provided to prevent damage to fuel gauge sending
unit if any incorrect connection is made on fuel
gauge. It is important to use the same capacity
fuse for replacement. If fuel gauge fails to
function check thefuse. NOTE The key must be
left in the ON position while the engine is
running so the fuel gauge will function. FILLING
THE FUEL TANK
CAUTION! Never remove the fuel tank cap or fill
the fuel tank when the engine is running, is hot,
or when near an open flame. Do not smoke when
working around inflam- mable fuel as the air
around the tractor is mixed with highly explosive
vapor. When pouring fuel, keep the container or
hose nozzle in contact with the metal of the fuel
tank to avoid the possibility of an electric
spark igniting the fuel.
handle
Adjustment lever Seat adjustment controls. Seat
suspension is adjustable to suit the weight of
any operator from J00 to 250 pounds (45.40 to
113.50 Kg). Turn adjuster handle to slide the
pointer along the scale to match the operator's
weight. Place handle in horizontal position after
adjustment is made.
Fill the fuel tank, preferable at the end of each
day's work. This will force out any
moisture-laden air and prevent condensation. NOTE
Do not fill the tank to its full capacity as
space is required for vapor expansion in the
event of a temperature change. A tank filled to
capacity may overflow if exposed to a rise in
temperature or direct sunlight.
The back cushion of the seat can be adjusted to
three different positions to the front or rear
and three different heights by means of the
mounting holes in the back cushion support. The
back rest extension is also adjustable to three
different heights.
The filler cap on the fuel tank has an air vent.
This vent should be kept open at all times to
assure proper flow of the fuel.
Before starting the tractor for each day's work,
open the fuel ank water drain cock on the left,
bottom side of the fuel tank to drain off water
and sediment. Close the drain as soon as clean
fuel appears.
Foot Release Lever
The foot release lever provides means of moving
the seat rearward from a preset position when the
operator is driving the tractor from a standing
position. The operator's weight along with
a forward movement returns the seat to the preset
position.
ADJUSTING THE SEAT The seat can be adjusted
forward or rearward to

Transmission Range and Speed Levers.
These levers are used to select any one of the
eight forward speeds and four reverse speeds.
Four forward speeds are available in the High (HI
) range and four in the Low (LO) range. See
"Ground _at_ A transmission brake actuated by
the clutch pedal facilitates shifting from
neutral into gear.
OPERATING THE TWO-WH EEL FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE
To operate the tractor in four-wheel drive,
follow the first three steps under Staking the
Tractor. Then with the clutch in the disengaged
position, move the Two-Wheel Four-Wheel drive
control lever ( Illust. 14) to the number 4
position and follow steps 4 and 5 under Starting
the Tractor.
SPEEDOMETERTACHOMETER
To operate in two-wheel drive (rear wheels),
disengage the clutch and move the Two-Wheel
drive control lever to the number 2 position.
This instrument records engine operating hours at
2400 r.p.m. and indicates the engine r.p.m. It
also indicates tractor speeds in miles per hour
according to the gear in which the tractor is
operating.
With a new tractor, if difficulty is experienced
in shifting from Four-Wheel to Two-Wheel
drive, it may be necessary to momentarily reverse
the tractor.
OVERLOADING Avoid overloading the machine. If the
engine speed drops excessively below that
established by posi- tion of the hand throttle,
the unit is overloaded. When this occurs, operate
in a lower gear. Over- loading causes undue
strain on pans, eventually
NOTE Use the two wheel drive when operating the
tractor in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th high range speeds
and on hard dry surfaces to reduce tire wear.

DRIVING THE TRACTOR
STEERING THE TRACTOR The tractor is steered in
the conventional manner by means of the steering
wheel actuating the power steering. To steer the
tractor with the two front wheels only, move the
Two-Wheel Four-Wheel steering control lever
forward to the number 2 position. To steer the
tractor with both front and rear wheels, move the
control lever rearward to the number 4 position.
CAUTION! When towing the tractor ground speed
should not excœd 20 milœ (32.20 Km) per hour.
NOTE If the tractor is to be towed for any
reason, the engine must be running to provide for
trans- mission lubrication, power brakes and
power steer- ing. If the engine cannot be run,
check so the fluid level in the transmission case
is at the Full mark on the transmission oil
level gauge, then add four additional gallons of
IH Hy-Tran a fluid into the transmission
case. After towing the tractor, drain the added
four gallons (15.21) of fluid so the fluid level
in the transmission case is again at the Full
mark on the transmission oil level gauge.
Refer to Lubrication.
NOTE Do not attempt to move the Two-Wheel
Four-Wheel steering control lever when hydraulic
power is not available. Selection of two-wheel
steering or four-wheel steering can be made while
the tractor is in motion.
Use two-wheel steering for most straight-away
field operations, shifting to four-wheel steering
for sharp turns.
STOPPING THE TRACTOR
Disengage the clutch and actuate the service
brake. Move the transmission range lever to the
neutral position. Manual brakes can be used for
emergency application immediately after the
engine is stopped.
NOTE Use two-wheel steering when operating the
tractor in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th high range speed.
TOWING THE TRACTOR When towing is necessary, use
a tow rope, chain, or cable and have an operator
steer the tractor and operate the brakes. Do not
tow the tractor by the front axle. When a tractor
is stuck, the power of both tractors should be
used, and a steady, even pull maintained by the
towing tractor. When towing a tractor, place the
transmission range lever in the N (neutral)
pœition.
PARK BRAKE The park brake is activated by
stepping on the park brake pedal. It is released
by pushing down on the release lever.
CAUTION! Always engage the park brake pedal when
parking the tractor.
NOTE In an emergency, the park brake can be used
to stop the tractor.
